Title: More comments and pics of '04 repairs.
Post by: zubzub on March 18, 2010, 07:01:34 PM
As I continue to sort out the wiring other road blocks appear.
This is the multi pin connector for the main gages in the dash ( temp and oil).

It may not be clear in this almost in focus pic, but the wires are all frayed and shorting with each other, if you don't know how to open these plugs, this is what happens, PO seems to have  twisted the hell out of this harness.
I cleaned up the frayed wires by crimping on and heat shrinking new wires.

re did the back of the panel as well

and while I was at it installed the new speedo.

this is the new harness I made to replace the frayed one

and this is the way the new speedo looks in the dash.

Not as nice as the original, the colors look cheesy, maybe I'll fix the original.
Speaking of original, this is my hand after working for 8 hours, stripping out parts from old scrapped buses, scavenging all the wiring etc I
needed, and basically grubbing about my filthy bus where everything is covered with 50 years of grime..

I didn't use to wear glove, hated it when I couldn't feel something. Now I wear the black nytril, now my hands stay clean. Momma hates grease on the furniture! ::)

Looks like you're getting things sorted out. On my Eagle 01 I had quite a mess too, but it's all better now!

Zub,

Whats the green wire in the 5th picture not attached to anything? Did you vacuum out in there before you put it back together  ???

I have 2 good complete sets of the gauges and plug in cords. All you do is plug them in.

Yeah its the harness that was frayed and shot, I could have made 2 splices on each wire , but that would have been 4 splices more, and  all on rough wires.  I actually really like the plug system they use on these buses, the other ones in the dash are still good, hope this is the only one I have to bypass.

That is one of the PO's mystery  wires, it went to the speedo but then at control panel it is loose, possible spare for the future, good eyes.
I wish I was done and ready to button up, the shop vac hasn't been by for awhile, maybe time for a visit.

Zub,

Ok, just thinking it might be a hot wire. Hate for it to ruin your hard work  ;)

I have plenty of uses for the shop vac here. But if I run out I'll keep you in mind  ;D

About 15 years ago my hobby switched from mechanical/metalworking stuff to woodworking. One of the BIG benefits was that after working in the shop for hours a few seconds at the sink with regular soap had me good to go rather than spending 10 minutes with hand cleaner, scrub brushes etc. Of course since then I've also discouvered nitrile gloves so when I do HAVE to venture into the greasy areas I have "protection".
