As I wade through the electrical problems, a by nonsensical bypass began to make a little sense. The engine bay controls.

If only everything could be this easy. Actually the 2nd pic does not do the sitution justice. The entire inside of the switch area was filled with crud, there must be a vortex up there, as I see no way for that much fine silt/mud to accumulate otherwise.
Mine looked the same the other day until I went to Walmart and bought about 8 cans of the engine degreaser. I warmed the motor and sprayed the entire motor and all the compartments with the engine cleaner. I got the wires and connectors everything. I let it set for about 30 minutes and hit it with a pressure washer. I had no clue my engine was silver in color. The "Detroit" letters are even black!!!
If you were over 40 years old you would be covered in crap too! ;D
The vortex is a great thought, as ours looked like a sister to yours, and they're not even related. ;D
Are we having fun yet? ::)
