Title: 8V71 fuel injectors
Post by: bevans6 on February 16, 2010, 02:05:12 PM
Man, it's a long winter!  I am sitting here dreaming up stuff to do as soon as it gets warm!

How do I check the condition of the injectors?  all I can think of is take them out and have them checked.  Is it a worthy thing to do, or just thinking of make work?  If I take them out, would I be better off just installing new ones and not bothering checking them (which I assume means special equipment at a dealer)...

thanks, Brian

Bryan

Having just checked all of mine last week I will tell you what I learned. Which is probably a billionth of what the "Big 3"
have forgotten but here it is anyways.

The keys to checking them are the first pump is not as important as the 4th or 5th pump, the ones I replaced had a pretty good first pump pattern which is profound the first time you see it (the fuel looks like tiny strings shooting out in 5-6 streams, it's really cool!) mine had an audible chirp that decreased as you pumped them a few times at which point the patterns started to lose a very small but visible amount of atomization. Then we compared them to new 9a90's and the chirp was not only crisper but it stayed consistent and the pattern retained it's clear atomization. There are many points of view on this but I went with the experience of Clifford, Don and my mechanic Curt and I ordered 8 injectors from Interstate Mcbee. They were more expensive than Clifford said (around $75 each) but I chalked that up to the times we live in and maybe my mechanic put a small markup on them.

I feel good about having them changed. Felt like a bit of a fresh start.

Hope it helps,

Rick

If it makes you feel any better Rick, new injectors for my 87 Jeep Wagoneer cost $93 each and that was 7 years ago. :)

Rick, isn't 20 bucks of that price a core charge on each injector.

good luck
