Title: Back from Las Vegas
Post by: TomC on February 16, 2010, 08:57:45 AM
Went to Las Vegas from Los Angeles and back.  Left Thursday and drove back yesterday (big mistake with traffic-but had a meeting I had to attend) in 5 1/2 hours, including an elongated fuel stop of 30 minutes.  Got right at 6 mpg pulling my car (35,000lbs total weight) cruising at 1850rpm at 59mph.  Coming home it was a comfortable 71 degrees with the windows open, and no heating issues.  The only hill I had to down shift on is the big south bound hill going up from the border, and pulled it at 40mph (by my GPS).  Need to replace my leveling valves-luckily had my manual leveling system since one of the leveling valves quit working.
My wife's mother came, and it was a really fun time (Mom in law is a pleasure to be around-as compared to my mother).  If you want to see a really good show, see Jubilee at Bally's casino-the last real big Vegas styled show.  And if topless offends you, the Saturday 7:30 show is all covered up.  Good Luck, TomC

Tom, thanks for the two posts on LV.

I would say that you got very good mileage for that trip.  LA to LV to LA is a pretty good pull both ways.  We folks in CO tend to think we are the only ones with "hills" ;D

Bet you were smiling about decision to do your turbo conversion!

Tom,

Glad everything went to plan, except for traffic.

Question, what do you tow? is it one of your MB's, and it so do you need to remove one of the flex disk's in the drive train  ???

I have an '83 MB I maybe someday plan to tow.

Gary- my MB is a '84 300 Turbodiesel.  Remco makes a differential disconnect for it.  The cable and knob is mounted on the floor in front of the driver's seat on the transmission hump.  With the engine off and in neutral, you just pull out the knob and the drive shaft will free wheel.  You then put the gear shift in park to hold the drive shaft from turning and off you go.  I tried to wire the rear lights through the 4 way, but the lights were not bright enough.  I rewired it to a 5 wire so I could have separate stop and turn like both the bus and car are wired, then have two LED magnetic sets of lights (two on each side) I just set up everytime (takes all of about 5 minutes for the lights, 15 minutes for the entire car).  Then when you want to re-engage the differential, I start the car in neutral and push in at the same time firmly, and with a little grinding, it goes right in.  The key is to spray the disconnect at the differential with silicone lubricant everytime you use it, and no problems.  But-I'm still building my truck with the garage in back so I don't have to deal with towing a car, then will be able to tow a small cabin cruiser instead.  Good Luck, TomC
