Title: Allison Shift Cable
Post by: jmblake on February 15, 2010, 08:51:03 AM
I'am going to do the switch from a standard to a automatic and in the process of finding all the piece's and parts needed, Does any one know the length of the shift cable? There is one in the classified adds that is 34'6" does that sound long enough? and also what depth of pan do I need? the trany I got has a 7" deep pan I see they make shallower ones. By the way it's a 81 MCI9. Thanks Jason

Or.....
You might want to try a Stone/Bennett shifter.  Just need to install wiring to the transmission. Might be somewhat easier than running a cable.

Jason, I just completed the swap from a standard on my 87 102A3. I had a 34ft 6in cable and it was to short to run from the tranny to the shifter with the shifter in the stock position. I did get a little creative though. I used the runner that the clutch rod was in that ran the length of the bus. I hooked the shift cable to the cross shaft that the clutch rod was attached to. On the other end of the cross shaft I attached another 3ft long cable that went up to the shifter. works great. It was an ugly job getting the standard shifter out though.               Cheers Gerry

Thanks Gerry, I didn't think that would be long enough, I was planning on pulling the cable through when I pulled the shift rod out, i hope it will work. Do you remember how deep your pan is? The trany I got has a 7" deep pan and i think Iam going to need the 4" deep pan. thanks Jason

Jason, if you can keep the 7 inch pan it would be better for you the more oil a Allison holds the cooler they run

good luck

Clifford,
I just read from a archive post of yours where you suggested that sometime's 2 filters could be enough to cool the Allison without a cooler? Is it worth a try or would you recommend a cooler. Thanks Jason

Jason I have the 6 in pan and it is even with the bottom of the engine oil pan.

Jason, if you can go with a cooler 2 filters will help on 740 if mounted where they can get plenty of fresh air.
They really need 2 filters anyway one on the supply line and one on the return line it extends the life of a 740.

good luck
