Title: harmonic balancer??
Post by: busshawg on January 21, 2010, 11:16:28 AM
I have a freind who isn't all that computer literate, not that I am. Anyway he has a 8V92 with pieces missing out of his balancer. He found one from a 6V, is it going to work?? He bought a 1988 MC 102 about a year ago and is having a lot of fun with it.

Which balancer are you talking about.  If it is the balancers at the end of the camshafts, I believe they are the same.  But if you are talking about the crankshaft harmonic balancer at the front of the engine, the 8V-92TA balancer is a very large balancer that is unique to that engine.  Do not interchange them-can create balancing harmonics that will destroy the engine.  Good Luck, TomC

I agree with Tom C, I had a balancer on a 4104/671 come apart. What a mess it broke welds on water lines did all sorts of damage. Detroit recommends replacing the crankshaft balancer each time you rebuild an engine.

I don't think you have to worry about him using a harmonic balancer from a 6V92 on a 8v92 the 6V92 doesn't have one.
I would like to know what parts he is talking about ?

good luck

Thanks for the responces guys, sorry it took so long to get back. We've been in quite a snow storm up here and have finally got things back to normal.

I stopped by his shop teh other night and he had a harmonic balancer sitting on his work bench. The balancer that sits on the back of the engine, off of the crank I guess. He siad it was off of a 6V92 and he wanted to replace his on his 8v92 as it was cracked. Mybe he has been mis-informed. Thanks again for the responces.
