Title: want a new dash and gauges for my eagle,
Post by: jackdale on January 13, 2010, 10:48:51 AM
I want to install new guages in my eagle, but do not know any thing about guages. I am getting the dash from R&M and the guages from Ron the bus nut. Is there anyone in the Albany OR. area that someone could recamend? I have been working on my o5 eagle for 9 years, always something to do.

Be carefull about the gauges. I bought a set fron Ron a few years ago for my eagle. Problem was they were discontinued stock. Could not get additional gages. The tach would not work because it runs off pulse rate of the alt. Could not get the right setting because the system voltage or something was wacky, and none of my senders would work. Senders were also discontinued. Best bet is egauges.com. They have everything you need rpm and speed ranges as well as senders. Below is my dash (Not quite finished).

Don't get me wrong. I have bought a ton of stuff from Ron. The tilt/tele steering wheel in the pic's came from him. The problem with the gage stuff is that VDO and others make these for custom apps. some with special senders. When the model run ends there may or may not be parts available.

This site may be helpful:

http://www.egauges.com/vdo_sgrp.asp?Subgroup=Fuel_Senders (http://www.egauges.com/vdo_sgrp.asp?Subgroup=Fuel_Senders)

I too, bought some gauges from Ron.  Get ready for a long snipe hunt.  I had a tough time finding senders for them.  VDO has pretty poor customer service, but after lots of diligence I found senders.  Like Eric, the tach would not get the proper pulse from my alternator so I bought a mag pickup from VDO to screw into the bottom of my bell housing which counts the teeth on the flywheel gear.  I had to count the number of teeth on the gear, relay that to VDO and their tech told me the dip switch setting.

To count the teeth I laid on my back under the engine and dabbed white out on the gear tooth that was showing through the hole.  That was number 1.  I then took a screwdriver and pried each tooth counting each one until the gear with the white out showed up again.  Wahla,  a lot of teeth.  I also called DD to verify the number on a 6v92.  It matched.

The fuel gauge sender was kind of hard to find for my aux tank.  Seems like you have to know the ohms.  The oil pressure, water,  oil, and tranny temp shouldn't be hard.  Match the setting parameters on the gauge to the parameters the sender puts out.  My oil temp is at a fitting on the side of the drain pan.  Tranny,  on the side of the tranny oil pan. Water is right at the thermostats housing.  (You should already have some stuff in place that is OEM.  The speedo--can't help you there.  I kept my old one.

The brakes are 1/4" air lines.   For turbo, I hooked a 1/4' copper line at the top of the engine air box and ran it to the dash.   Voltage meter wire should be in place already.  I don't have a pyro for the turbo, so I can't help you there.

If you have an eagle manual it will show you where the stock wires are for the senders, so you don't have to run new wires for them.

Hi Jackdale

See it's your first post... so welcome aboard! I'm new here too, so my advice isn't always the best. But you might want to contact Pete Pappas - super nice guy and very knowledgeable. He had some great gauges displayed at Bussin' 10... same type he installed on his own bus. They looked great and worked great. Just a thought.

I did mine in all digital. Big WOW facter and real easy to read as well as you can set limits and have the gage flash when it hits limits. Check Dakota Digital  - I think they still have a life time warranty on them. Have used mine for 6 years now with no problem.

I too would like to see pics of those gauges installed.  We will be getting new gauges to go in the new bus. Looked them up, they look nice. Just curious, but do the digital ones work only on computerized engines?

I have a number for vdo tech. There is a guy there named Jim. He knows his stuff! I screwed up my sender in the fuel tank, and he was able to find the replacement on a 35 year old Eagle!!! I wanted the Eagle emblem gagues but couldn't make myself pay!!! I went with vision black from egauge because you can get dual air and trans temp to match. I'm a tight wad because I am trying to save money to git me one of them NICE paint jobs like Clifford!!! I keep waiting for his eagle project thread so I can study it!!! It looks like a million in that little pic in the corner!! Show me big pics ;D

I found some Eagle VDO gauges for mine and have not used all of them. They are used, I'm sure you want new. I would go with what Clifford suggested if you want to keep the Eagle look.

Where in Albany? I hail from Salem, folks still live there. I used to live on Battle Creek Rd not far from R&M many years ago.

You might want to look at Eagles International, we have an Eagle Mall where all kinds of Eagle related stuff is found.
