Title: Frustrated by parts search... are we driving dinosaurs??
Post by: RickB on January 13, 2010, 06:02:54 AM
Hey All,

I am trying to shop around for a turbo and a blower and after getting great advice from Clifford and Zeroclearance on what to buy I am really struggling to even find parts because of cross reference #'s. That and the fact that we seem to be from a "forgotten" age... "two stroke I didn't even know Detroit made a two stroke" was the youngest guy of one of the 3 actual humans I was able to talk to yesterday's response.

So, there is a part # for most parts stamped on them somewhere right? should be easy right?

Well, I get the part #'s I need and one appears to be superceded (took 3 hours to glean that piece of relevant info I might add) so I decide to let the internet work for me and go to the Garrett website, well of course that doesn't work because it is a detroit part made by garrett in the dark ages and after the 2nd "I didn't know detroit even made a 2 stroke" of the day I was quite ...hmmm, chipper, shall we say?

Maybe I had high expectations but I thought if I said I would like to buy a Garrett/Air Research TV8511 turbocharger for my 8v92 serial # blah blah blah and it is detroit  part# blah blah blah that I would get a price before the rapture.

Well, I did, $1115 and 49cents plus shipping for a reliabilt oh and that might take like 3 weeks sir...

Wow! JD at C and J and my mechanic said it would be around $600 but I hadn't found the time consuming all important part# for them yet when they quoted me a ballpark figure.

I guess I have gotten used to being able to shop for a good price and that doesn't seem to be "part" (pun intended) of the plan when searching for parts for a motor that most diesel mechanics today have never even seen.

We should get funding and a grant for being an endangered species!!! LOL

Just venting. We all need to do that now and again right?

Rick, this the one you need will give a little smoke on takeoff but works best for torque on the high end .
If you are going to change anything on that engine you will need a parts number DD works on the serial number and will sell you parts for the engine the way it left the factory as I am sure you found out

RR8927027 (DD) with A/R 1.39

good luck

Clifford,

I actually found that part# after about 4-5 hours of talking to receptionists at DD shops yesterday the conversation's went something like this;

"Hello, could I speak to the parts dept. please?"

"Please hold."

10 minutes go by.....

"I'm sorry our parts man is not in today.

"Do you know when he might be back in?"

"No, but you can leave a message"

"Well, ma'am my request is kind of complex and I should really speak to someone"

"Well, he hasn't been in all week"

"Excuse me, your parts guy hasn't been in all week and you guys are still in business?"

Click.

Try using that part# anywhere but at a detroit shop (like at the manufacturers website) and you'll draw a blank.

I'm fine... and I'm persistent. It ain't the end of the world

Persistence always wins in the end.

Don't forget Don Fairchild sells parts too! (may not be the cheapest like an online price, but hey I bet he'll know a 2 stroke DD from a weed eater! ;))

Yep, the weedeater thing came from a detroit dealer up here, I called the detroit dealer up here, the only one within a couple hundred miles in any direction and told the guy I had a 2 stroke detroit, he said that would be a weedeater and detroit don't make them, he even laughed and asked me if i had to mix the oil and gas on it, the whole time he was having fun with my ignorance about diesel motors, I'm thinking the same about him and he was the dealer/repair shop.

Doncha just love that attitude when they start off by saying something to the effect of "that's so flipping old they probably don't make it anymore"?  I went through that last week looking for parts for my Kubota genset which Kubota lists on their website as a "PRIOR PRODUCT".  (that means either they don't import it anymore or they flat out don't make it anymore - I'm not sure which)

I got a partsman who sounded to be about 13 and his first words were "oh - that's probably obsolete".  I did my relaxing exercises - I have found they work much better than telling them what I think of their attitude.  So much later in the conversation after we had discovered that not only does Kubota still stock parts for this generator, they actually stock parts for the parts in the generator and they stock a lot of them all over the US of A - after we had discovered all that I very politely said "I guess there must be a lot of these old generators still running?"

And where do they get off dissing old stuff anyway?  Without our old crap there wouldn't be much need for partsmen.

Oops... my bad

The receptionist yesterday didn't say "He hasn't been in all week" she said "He hasn't been in for a week".

We are a dying breed... and so are our 2 strokes.

I say.... smoke and scream and leak until we're outta here! and I ain't just talking about our engines fellow DD freaks!

Anybody with me?

Parts for the 2 strokes are not hard to come by it depends on the area you are in.
On the Texas and La coast you can just about buy parts in a general store same in the oil field areas but watch the so called dealers that say authorized Detroit Diesel (like FreightLiner) and have the 60's series logo man are they a joke. The German owners are trying to make it even worse by squeezing the smaller dealers out like Delaney and Alf that has been around for 50 years and putting it in the hands of their truck dealers, parts for the 2 stroke are big buck deal I read 500 million a year

good luck

What do people think of MTU for parts and such?  http://extranet.detroitdiesel.com/Off-Highway/MtuDetroitDiesel/en/index.aspx (http://extranet.detroitdiesel.com/Off-Highway/MtuDetroitDiesel/en/index.aspx)

It looks to me like they own the Detroit Diesel 2 stroke business now.  They say they have new engines...  They also seem to have the Reliabilt name.

I'm going to chime in here if Clifford or Don are involved you are headed in the right direction.  I'm sure there are others that are really knowledgeable also on here!

I went through this with a local DD guy....they knew their stuff.....but for some unknown reason to me, he didn't take me seriously when I was having the 8V92 rebuilt, maybe it was the 25 year old bus, maybe it was me!   He sure drug his feet!  I ended up spending well over 20grand by the time I was finished having this baby rebuilt!  I had a friend that stepped in and Jasper did the work and parts collection, any mistakes made.......were mine!

Listen to Clifford or Don and good luck and be patient!

Rick;

Give me a call if you have any more problems, I can get any engine part you need. I drop ship all over the U.S.

I have a few turbos and blower's in stock that I can rebuild and get to you if needed. I just need to know the engine serial # and I can have it looked up to see how it came from the factory.

Clifford, The Germans don't believe in our dealer system, they thank there system is the best in the world.
they are pushing Valley out but Delaney and Ahlf is going to stay in business for a few more years. I had a long talk with Tim yesterday and he did not sign up to do warranty work but will still do all other work.

Rick,

Clifford will probably find it for you, but I've never been disappointed finding parts by calling Luke at US Coach.  He can get it just by me descibing it as, "that gizmo on the curb side about 2" around with two hoses hooked to it."  A bit of exaggeration but not far from the truth.

Rick,
Not to try and steer anything away from Don, who I already suggested to you. But there is also a place in Scott City, MO (just south of Cape Girardeau, MO, think Mississippi River & river boats!). It's an old mom & pop Detroit Dealership that has everything & I mean everything for 2 strokes and even some stuff for newer DD's. (last time dad was over there after a specific part we'd already called ahead for the older gent asked dad "need anything else while yer over here?" dad said "as a matter of fact would you happen to have such & such?" {I forgot what it was ;)} and the old timer said "oh yes here somewhere! I can assure you if they made it, we got it my wife orders everything!"

Don you may want this as a contact for maybe selling your kits to also!

Midwest Diesel Services
3360 Nash Rd.
Scott City, MO 63780

And yes, I almost forgot Luke over on the right side of the country! Sorry Luke!;D

I tried Luke... He hasn't been in the last few times I have called. Anybody know how is health is??? Wasn't he sick a while back?

I have to say I would love to buy from Don because he's so valuable to all of us here. That's worth it in my book.

Luke looked fit as a fiddle at the bussin10. I sure did enjoy talking to him!

I called about some pricing & he is out of the office for another week or so.

Rick, you will like buying parts from Don I buy from him and send others to him he is not going to mark his parts up 500% plus he can get DD or aftermarket and the best part is telling him what you want and he knows what your talking about when you are trying to upgrade I let him do all the work for me.
I have a tip for you buy the complete over haul gasket set from Don it will save you money in the long run those individual gaskets get pricey from DD you will use most down the road or I will send Van he will help use them up lol

good luck

I agree completely with buying from Don, & Luke as they are both very supportive to you guys hobby & my occupation.

I also agree that Luke was looking and acting fit as a fiddle in Arcadia.

I only mentioned the place in MO in case someone needs something NOW or is that area!
Dad & I have both been there and it's like going back in time when you walk in the door.
The place is awesome, an I have to agree that "if they ain't got it, somebody forgot to order it!" ;)
