Title: I hate freezing weather!
Post by: belfert on January 10, 2010, 08:39:15 AM
It is still only 9 degrees here.  I spent 20 minutes with a heat gun trying to thaw the door on my bus.  I finally gave up as I was getting cold.  I had proper winter gear on, but standing in one place holding a heat gun is not the way to stay warm.

It is supposed to be 30 degrees or warmer later in the week so I will try again then.

Yeah, me too. I haven't been in the bus for a month or so, other than to check the batteries last week. Glad I did as I had turned off the coach batteries this fall (which I normally don't do) and forgot to turn them back on, so they were down a bit. Got them connected to the house system and charging again.

Spring will come one day. In the mean time, I'm doing some much needed work inside.

Brian just a DUMB suggestion..........but have you thought about using a rubber mallet to tap gently around the edges of the door frame to break the ice up and allow you to open the door?
By the way the stock door on our Dina opened right up the other day even though the fuel tank was iced up! ;D (I guess one can't have everything!  ;))

No, I haven't tried a rubber mallet.  I'll see if I can find mine a little later.

I dod have alot of stuff to do inside like Gumpy so not getting into the bus isn't the end of the world.

Have you tried simply turning your buddy heater off? Your door might thaw out then...lol

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I really, really tried not too.

I know what you mean about the cold. Before we left, it didn't get above 8 degrees as a high, with wind. I was doing a lot of work in the cold, and it was COLD.

God bless,

John

Not possible.  Haven't you heard of GLOBAL WARMING?  The problem must be that it's so hot outside, your body THINKS it's cold!

There's a positive side to the cold weather for me; I've spent every weekend for the last 2 months or so building a new shed, often working in sub-zero temperatures. This weekend I said 'enough is enough' due to the deep snow on the ground - so I worked on the bus instead! Still sub-zero but at least dry and out of the wind

By the way, silicone spray will apparently prevent rubber door seals sticking in cold weather. I was told this a couple of weeks ago by a friend who works for a rubber seal company - I had just related to him the story of how I had struggled to get any of my car doors open the previous morning, and had later had them three of them come open by themselves at 80mph. Apparently I had unlatched them whilst trying to open them, and the seals un-froze whilst on the road an hour later

Don't forget, Jeremy, that our sub zero is Fahrenheit, and yours is Celsius. Still cold.

God bless,

John

Brian;
How about a table top bar b que and some plywood. Get the coals goin' and set it just out side the door with sheets of plywood leaned against the door to direct the heat. It only has to get to 33 deg. You won't have to stay out side. Hot coffee and a window to monitor at a safe, warm distance. Worked for me when the Bronco doors froze....Cable

You might try using that aerosol spray windshield deicer on the door edge.  And once you get it open flush all the ice off of the mating surfaces with that stuff before you do the silicone which is a superb idea.

And in the lock that seems to jam up....spray some carb cleaner in there to flush the oil out that thickens when it gets cold and colder.  The Russians used 100% grain alcohol to "unjam" discarded German automatics, pistols and subs, and use them against the fleeing Germans that had just tossed them as useless.  They shot a lot of Germans in the back with the German's own gun.  At least according to my German father in law who fought on the wrong side in Russia and later in France.

Good luck,

John

Don't laugh too hard Arizonites  ;D  If it can hit 21° in south Florida, Arizona could be the next victim.

Our winters can be pretty brutal but we do have great summers up here so I guess it evens out somewhat, this winter has been kinda mild so far but we've got a long way to go and that can change quickly, most of the storms so far have tracked south of us and we've been left reading about them for the most part, the drawback to a mild winter is that with the lack of a snowpack in the winter we end up with a dry summer and our fire season can be bad at times, we've got a lot of remote regions up here that sometimes get torched by lightning and it's hard to control them and with a lot of federal and state land up here sometimes they just let them burn themselves out.  Out behind the Skanee house there are about 40 miles before you hit the next house.
