Title: DDEC Wiring Ques on MCI/M-9 6V92TA w/Allison HT740 Auto Trans
Post by: leonaiz2 on January 07, 2010, 09:44:46 AM
I am not only a newbie, but I don't know much about buses except information I have gathered from various bus conversion websites. I am anticipating buying a 1980 MCI/M-9 6V92TA with Allison/Auto HT740. I have not seen it yet (except for Pixs) and I have been advised that the DDEC wiring needs to be hooked up; I am just wondering what is entailed labor/parts to do this. Knowing this would be instrumental when/if I make an offer. I have good information from MCI9.com on what to look for when buying a bus which is more than I had before. I just need "Your" help from this forum so I can make an informed decision.  Thanking You in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Kind Regards, Leona  [email][flash=200,200] ::)

Welcome to the forum, Leona, this is a good place to get a lot of information.  One thing you can do is search on things like DDEC, DDEC installation, things like that, and find previous conversations that are interesting.  I joined in May this year, and just a few weeks ago finished going back page by page - well over 600 pages now - and reading threads of interest to me on many topics.

Your coach probably didn't come with a 6V92TA with DDEC in 1980, it probably had an 8v71 and 4 speed manual gearbox.  So the DDEC is a complete retrofit.  I don't think that's a trivial task, so "DDEC wiring needs to be hooked up" can mean a lot of different things.  Members here are expert, have been there and done that, and can advise you or even get it done for you.

I also found the MCI9.com site useful for education, but please do a search on "Sam Walker" and make your own mind up  if you decide to do business with them.  I have, and had no problems, but others had different experiences.  That's all that needs to be said about that!

Again, welcome.

Brian

Well the person you need to speak to is Sam Caylor at Caylor Supply in Rantoul Kansas.
Sam will tell you the truth about MC-9's.

Leona -

Welcome aboard the madness!  Lots of good info available here, as well as www.busnut.com (http://www.busnut.com) and the MCI busnut group on Yahoo.

FYI, MC-9s in 1980 came with either the 8V71 or the 6V92TA engine, neither of which were DDEC.  The HT-740 Allison is also mechanical, not electronic.

If, in fact, this coach you're contemplating has a DDEC, it has been retrofitted.

Roadrunner is right, the fellow you want to talk to is Sam Caylor.  The other Sam - "Walker", well. . . let's just say he and the judicial system go back a long way, to many a busnut's chagrin.

But before going further, might I ask what you want to do with this bus?  Might help us give you more intelligent answers!

FWIW & HTH. . .
