Title: snow storm (OT) maybe lol, and busnuts
Post by: cody on December 19, 2009, 11:58:18 AM
According to the yahoo news on here, the east coast is getting nailed with a major snow storm, we've got a lot of busnut friends looking out their windows thinking they are in michigan or minnisota right now.  I can't think of anyone that could be better prepared for a storm than a busnut, correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't matter if your in florida when a hurricane is comeing in or in washington dc as the snow deepens, we've got the best chances cause most of our buses are pretty much self contained with generators,  when the power goes out, we've got the ability to fire up the generator and light our house and maybe our neighbors too, just do it safely, yesterday, frank (slow rider) and I were discussing this in the chat room, he had talked about a trip to lowes for a ventless heater that could be run off a 20 pound tank, when your dependant on electric heat and the power goes out, you've still got options and maybe the only heated house in your area with one, just be careful, pick one thats rated for indoor use and use it with care.  With the storm raging, we're thinking of all our friends in the affected areas, hoping that they are safe and warm, those of us that live with these conditions are better prepared for them but still our friends drop after suffering a heart attack while cleaning up the snow, be careful and let us know your ok when you can.

Ah can I add go and get it before the power goes out as everyone else will be doing the same thing!
You might not be lucky enough to get one.

Last winter when the ice storm hit our area I tried to go get a generator and they already had a 300 + name waiting list. I drove to Jackson, TN after calling first and was assured my name was high enough on the list to get one when I got there!
But when I got there they were sold out and me and a dozen others were standing around the manager like a pack of wild dogs growling. He gave us all a discount price and told us we could wait for the truck coming in at midnight and he would have them load us then or we could come in at 6:00 AM and pick them up.
I waited, the truck was late it showed up @ 2:30 AM, but it did show up, and I was nice and happy to be headed home with 2 5500W generators (1 for the house & 1 for the shop) ;D

So don't be left out in the cold plan ahead!
FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

Good point bryce, waiting till the last minute is gone won't keep the house warm, thats where busnuts usually have an advantage, most have an onboard generator that, if we're lucky enough to be able to keep them at home, will keep the lights on and the heat going.

Kinda interesting that I had a similar discussion with a friend last week.  They sounded rather intimidated by the potential winter weather that looms every year.  My response was "Bring it on!".   I personally LOVE a good blizzard.  They kept asking "What if... " questions.

What if the electricity goes out...
* I have two generators, one portable and one permanently mounted in the bus.  No problem.

What about cooking....
* I have 2 propane gas grill (and four full 20 lb tanks).  I have a propane stove and oven in the bus and 35 gallons in the tank. Add to that charcoal grills and camp style dutch ovens, three white gas stoves, a microwave that runs off the bus generator.

Water ...
* 4 cases of bottled water, and a home well that I can run off generator electric.

Heating the house ...
* My house is heated by an oil burner furnace.  The generators can take care of the electrical side of the circulation pumps.  If the home take hits bottom, I got 130 gallons of bus diesel fuel to suppliment.  Beyond that, I have 2 woodstoves and 2+ cords of seasoned hardwood.

Yeah, but how much gas do you have for the generators?...
* in addition to the four five gallon cans, I have a siphon hose to start pulling it from vehicles.  As of this exact moment, I can pull 21+18+14+15+ 24+8 = 90 gallons   That should run a generator (off and on) for quite some time.

......... the person gave up questions before I got a chance to start taking batteries, inverters, lanterns, etc. etc.

It is snowing like crazy here right now, and I have a big S.E.G  waiting to fire up my two snow blowers. The walk-behind is just to help out family and friends, and is already in the back of my pick up.  The real fun is the 47" 2 stage on my John Deere tractor that puts snow in the next county.   Yeeeee Haaaaa

Right now in Los Angeles- 79 degrees with clear blue sky's, no smog-one of those glorious days that makes living in the craziness all worth while.  Good Luck, TomC

Tom, sounds kinda nice right now, great temps and sunny days, yep, bring on global warming lol.  The down side is the day the earth shakes again and suddenly there is ocean front property available in los vegas lol.  I'm thinking I can survive a snowstorm but a freeway falling on my head would leave a mark.

BK- ya I remember that.  We get some low snow that makes it to Los Angeles about once every 30 years- a frequency I like.  When I was driving cross country, I worked till Dec 15 and took off till Mar 15-I liked snow so much.  I still miss having 3 months off every year-but at least I'm home all the time now.  Good Luck, TomC

One day out of the year hardly seems worth it!  ;)

I'll take the snow. It's only temporary. Smog is permanent, no matter how much of your money they throw at it.

Yep, craig, you've got that right, I'll take the snow too, bridges falling on my head makes a boo boo that even mama can't kiss and make better lol.  I haven't been out on the west coast since the late 60's when I went out to look and see what everyone was talking about and from what I could see then the people stood way too close together back then, I imagine it's even more crowded now.  The upper penninsula has less people than a medium sized town and is the size of connecticut, we got lots of room to swing a dead squirrel around lol.

Craig,

I am with you on this. In LA you can wake up in the morning and hear the birds coughing right outside your window...lol.

Did you hear that the US says they will cut emissions, as part of our deal? Yup, and we will throw Hillary in, as a bonus ;D :D :D ;D

God bless,

John

Since the bus has wheels I just rolled mine down to Yuma AZ for the winter and look at the pictures of snow in the net. Jerry

Well we got about 16 inches of snow.  We didn't lose power, which is good since we have an electric fired boiler.  We had already made the required bread and milk run so life is good.  The daughter in law and grandkids spend the night with us and are outside enjoying the snow as only kids can.

So far the plow has hit our street enough to have a path down the center but it will take a lot of digging to get the cars shoveled out enough to get to the path.  We are doing the "close the schools" dance hoping they will give us Monday off.

Otherwise life is good...........

Now that is something I would love to see. Pics? Video?

Sorry I couldn't resist. I just can't picture Frank dancing. ;D

Cody, bridges falling down are not unique to CA - isn't that right Craig and all of the rest of the MN folks ;)

And they didn't need no stinkin' earthquake!!
