Title: De Carbon "ing" a D two stroke
Post by: JohnEd on December 18, 2009, 11:03:38 AM
I recently read a post from somewhere that asked about the subject.  I don't think there were any snappy answers.

What about this:  Long ago in a land far away I used to race desert bikes for fun.  Was really wrapped up in that for years.  A really big issue with 2 cycle 2 stroke gas engines is the SPARK PLUG.  They foul out and your power drops by 75% or something more horrible.  During that journey, Full Synthetic mix oil came along.  We used "half" as much oil and the engines ran cooler so we could lean things out for more power.....such a deal.  We quickly learned that out fouling problems were resolved.  Engines that went thru a plug every day started using the same plug "indefinitely".  We even installed "old fouled out" plugs and the mix actually cleaned those old plugs and returned them to full operation.  My favorite was KLOTZ OIL made in LA.  Then we started pulling down the engines for annual ring changes and found that the combustion chambers and rings were whistle clean and we got two seasons out of a ring.  There was no down side to the stuff except expensive but not outta sight.

A long while back I read that the shops of old would charge the fuel filters with ATF during change out.  It was said that the ATF gave the injectors a good lubing.  Recently I read that ATF was a blend of synthetic since it was first mad all those many years ago.  Syn takes huge amts of heat and is slipperier than Dino D.  Also recently, a knowledgeable Knut mentioned that the new ATF had "new" stuff in it that would harm a D's innards.  Is that true?  Can we just load the filters up with "pure synthetic" and get a cleaning and decarboning?  If you could have seen what that stuff did for our engines, well....

Hope someone has info on the "overhaul" sans wrenches.

Ok,

That makes sense.  Still, it used to be a common practice at filter change time in "the day".  And I assure you I was never there.  What always struck me was that ATF has never been cheaper than D in any way in any market so "they" must have had a heck of a motive.

Thanks for that Dallas.  1200 rpm sounds like a quick time fast idle and from what i have read the DD won't live long at any sort of idle....not to mention the slobber tubes.  Guess that proves it.

If you want to clear your Detroit 2 stroke out, just take it out and drive the living you know what out of it.  Best is to find a 3-5 mile long hill that you can take a run up it with your foot on the floor.  Just watch the exhaust, and when it is clear-your done!  Good Luck, TomC
