Title: Alright I need a memory refresher! Front Brakes 102A3
Post by: Busted Knuckle on December 10, 2009, 04:42:24 PM
OK it's been like ages since I did the brakes on one of these beasts.
Can some one refresh my memory on how the pins holding the brake shoes come out?
I have the wheel & drum off, and I have removed the little keeper that goes in the slot on each pin. But I can not get the pins to budge one bit!
FWIW the brake shoe on the top of the curbside is so froze up it took a 4' pry bar to get the shoe up away from the hub where we could see what we were doing! Needless to say this church bus from the East coast has not seen proper maintenance or a grease gun in a very long time!

BTW FWIW I can't find my 96-102 Maintenance manual anywhere. I did find the parts manual, but it is no help here!

I don't know about the 102, but on the 9, there's a little flat keeper on the back side that slips in a groove in each pin, and is bolted to the casting. Then the pins slip out.
If they haven't been greased, it's unlikely they'll come out easily. Think big hammer and punch with possibly a hot wrench.

Thanks Craig, that is more or less what I remembered!
Like I said the flat keeper has been removed but the pins are STUCK like I mean STUCK1
I soaked them all night last night with PB Blaster and several times today also, but looks like smoke wrench here I come! (heat is a good think this time of year anyway!)
