I know the subject of GPS has been covered here but I was wondering if anyone had a truck route gps system that was reasonably priced. You can get gps systems for a couple of hundred dollars but when you want the truck routes it more than doubles the price.
The GPS I use now thought that I could fit the bus through a 12 foot tunnel --- I may have fit but I would have left the ac units and sat dome on the ground as I entered.
Not needing surprises like that and wandering down residential city streets or crowded tourist areas I thought a GPS that knows truck routes would be helpful
Does anyone have experience with these???

There are several models of GPS available that claim to understand low clearance.
However, they will only know clearances on defined "truck routes." That will not include residential streets and "tourist areas."
FWIW.

Melbo,
We have the Garmin 465T, which is the truckers version. Very nice unit, it is around the $450 range, worth it in my opinion.
When you set it up you type in the measurements of your bus, so it won't put you in one of those tunnels! I find it real handy to keep me out of places I shouldn't be. You can also switch it to car mode and it becomes a regular GPS. Truckers unit also has listings of anything a trucker would need on the road(repair,diesel,etc.).

I also have the Garmin 465T and agree with Brandon. It is a nice unit but as Sean points out, the info is limited once you leave the defined truck routes so don't count on it to keep you out of trouble.
The one thing I find extremely useful is the NTTS database which as Brandon points out lists everything a trucker/bus would need. That feature along with the road hazard warnings makes the unit real nice.
I tend to leave the unit in truck mode most of the time, even when in the car as I find it gives better routing information.

Several of our truck drivers have them.
Some say they are the best thing since sliced bread...some say they wished they would have kept running their old one.
