Title: Bus Ramps
Post by: gm4106 on December 06, 2009, 11:09:51 AM
My wife's Dad and Mom fly in to town for the week. So had plains on making the ramps. We had a great weekend making ramps for the bus.

those appear to be 2X12 pressure treated is that true. That's a great height.

Those look good.  And they look heavy.  Mine aren't nearly as pretty as yours but something I did that I haven't regretted was to drill a couple of holes in the end of them and embed a heavy piece of rope in epoxy so that I can drag them around easily.

4106,

They look great. I like the idea of spaces to save weight.

What do you use to keep from running off the end??

I piled gravel behind my shed for mine and have run slightly past the tops a couple of times, but they are tapered on both ends so I don't fall off an edge.

These ramps are to have around the house and if anyone in the area needed the use them. My plain was to use a wheel chock on the front wheel. So when I back up on the ramps my front wheel will hit the wheel chock. And that should stop from going off the end of the ramps

As the saying goes. "Measure twice or removed ramp from bedroom once."

They look great-but-they look pretty steep.  Have you tried to run the bus up on them? If you have an Allison auto, no problem.  They might be too steep for a stick without slipping and revving the engine alot.  Good Luck, TomC

I was actually wondering  about this...
Is there any reason why  it needs to be cut at an angle?

Coulden't it just be stairs in 2" increments for less cutting?

I was climbing under my bus today and realized that if I get any bigger I won't fit.

I've got a bent leveling arm on one side (lean) and I may need more room to work to change it.
And while I'm thinking about it: What causes the leveling arm to bend? If it is bent does that mean that  the valve needs replacement for sure? And do ya'll always buy new  leveling arms or straighten the old ones out?

Nice ramps.  I wonder about the idea of adding wheels to the back side so they hit the ground when you pick it up, like a hand truck.

Bending the link between the arm & axle is how I was told to fine tune the ride height. Maybe the link needs adjusting - OR - maybe the leveling valve is going bad - OR - maybe you have an airbag that is leaking faster than the valve can keep up. (That was a problem on one of mine, replacing the valve didn't fix the lean, but replacing the porous air bag did.   8) )

For ramps, I think I'd rather have stackable boards so as to be able to vary the desired height. Also, the weight won't be as much to deal with.

Clifford, Big Foot declined to touch my Eagle, but i was quoted $4000 for a set, braced and installed by a dealer.  i now have 3 2 by 12 boards nailed together.  Cost about $30.  With a little occasional exercise, i don't need ramps as big as the ones shown here, so i can still move them easily.

After looking again I realize they are too steep for my 4104, the body would hit at either end before the wheel got to the ramps.

That was a big consideration on mine.  I used planed 2x10 (9.5" actual) because they would fit under the body in front of the drivers.  I place them ahead of the drivers and roll forward onto them.  They are a really tight fit for the fronts but they work there too.  9.5" was more than enough in my case because I can actually squirm under the rear with the bags deflated.  Its not that much fun but I can do it.
