I've been holding off on posting this because it seems to be an ongoing thing but as some of you know libby had a heart attack a couple of days ago and is back in the hospital in marquette, her prognosis isn't as good as I'd like, her doctor said that the complexity of her situation with the poor condition of her arteries, her bad kidneys and now a heavily damaged heart makes her survival tenuous at best. He said for us to be cautiously hopeful but if she pulls thru this latest set of problems her recovery will take months provided no additional complications set in. This effectively stops any travel plans we had, my primary focus now is her care.
Cody,
I am sure everyone's prayers and thoughts will be for you and Libby after hearing this terrible news. I am sure you will be missed at Arcadia etc. but as you stated Libby is #1 in our thoughts as well as ours as of now. Keep us informed, don't let Libby feel like giving up, lots of people looking forward to seeing you guys again.
Gary
All we can do is pray that she improves. She has the will to live, and along with prayer, the long recouperation time will be successful, I pray.
Cody, your faithfulness to care for her and to place her at the top of your priority list, give a shining example to us all, and I honor you for everything and pray for you that your energy will continue, as will your wisdom to care for Libby.
We support you, and will hold you. Anything more that we can do, please ask. I am sure that someone will be there for you, any time.

Cody,
I am so sorry to hear this. I haven't been around as much, lately, so I missed the info before it "hit the papers." That is really sad. She has had a very rough go of it. I will still be praying for both of you.
I am glad that you made the right decision to not travel. That must have been tough for you, but you will NEVER, EVER regret that decision.
God bless both of you.
John
Cody and Libby...me and Dianne are praying for yours and her comfort.
Love of Love being sent your way!

Cody, words about fail me. As a non-religious man, all I can say is keep your faith alive, and that each day infallibly brings a new dawn with new opportunities. I went through a very similar challenge earlier this year, and what got me through was keeping on doing each thing, whatever it was, one after the other.
All the best,
Brian
Just a short update, I got a chance to get an outline from her doctor of what could be done and what his thoughts are, he is scheduling her for dialysis today, that will help her kidney function and take some of the stress off her heart, tomorrow she is going to have an MRA so they can get a clear and new picture of the condition of her arteries, the next day she will again have dialysis, they are approaching the idea of putting in stents into the blockages where her arteries enter her kidneys, that seems to be critical to her survival, very few doctors do that surgery, one of the doctors that does it is at mayos, he has agreed to review the MRA and possibly fly into marquette and place the stents, this is a situation where the patient can't go to the doctor, the doctor will come to the patient, her doctor says that this may be her only chance of survival. The surgury comes with a high degree of risk because of the condition of her arteries but she has almost no chance of survival without it. It would be done in the next few days if it is determined that it can be done and she hangs on for that long.
My heartfelt best wishes, Cody.
John
Cody, We have never had the pleasure of meeting yall, but, from all accounts on the boards, you are both loved by all. Our prayers are with you both, and btw, you are one of a kind, taking such good care of Libby. Take care of yourself so you can be there for her. Prayers, Ken and Ruthi
Cody,
Julie and I are just plain SAD at this whole situation for both of you.
Hang in there....I know you will.
We pulled out some pictures from Bussin when we were all hanging out at one of the famous, NCBOB, FLCliff and Cody's pot luck lunches, that the Gals put together for us.
That was a great couple of days and some mighty fine eating. :D
I remember talking to Libby and she was worried about You, killing yourself working on the coach.
Now were worried about Her.
We sure hope you get a "miracle"

Paula & I are so sad to hear of yet another set back in Libby's health. We will continue to keep both of you and your family in our prayers. Jack
Libby was taken to surgury and had the dialysis port put in, then she had dialysis, the nurse said she had some problems in surgury but they were prepared and dealt with them, then stabilized her again and did the dialysis, she is stable but very weak. Tomorrow she has the MRA, I'll be heading down there to spend time with her tomorrow, today was too stormy for me to go.
Cody, tell Libby we send our love and prayers to both of you.
Dean
Cody,
Sorry to hear about the set back. You are in our prayers.
Bill and Hyeyong.
Cody, thanks for the updates. Our prayers are going out for both of you. As I've said before, while your focus is on caring for her, be sure to also take care of yourself so that you can take care of her.
Libby had a quiet night but she had an MRA scheduled for this morning and had some difficulties, they had to stop the MRA and work on her, they are going to try to do the MRA this afternoon, with another dialysis following it. They brought her a nice recliner into her room to help make her more comfortable, she is apparently having problems with laying down and breathing so this will allow her to sit up for a while and look out the window, she'll like that. The social worker also called and gave me a heads up on what to expect if she can come home at some point, or when, I'm going to have to make some modifications to the house to make it handicap assessible, ramps and all the good stuff, right down to the shower stall and shower door, I've got some work ahead of me I guess. One thing that will help is this house has a lot of open space with archways, drawbacks are the bathrooms arn't friendly and the bedrooms are upstairs so I'll probably have to change that. I've also got to make a ramp, I was going to when my heart attack layed me low so thats at the top of the list again and a way to load a chair for her, she'll also be on oxygen all the time now but thanks to sonny and jim shepard thats handled, I still have to get her a portable tank supplier that will also fill the tanks but that'll come with time I guess, it looks like I've got time to work on these things if she survives. As long as she is fighting we've got some hope.
Cody and Libby,
As always you are in our prayers. I'm sorry these trials have come you way as they have.
Matt & Liz
Just got a progress report from libby's doctor, tomorrow will be the big day, a doctor from mayos will be coming in tonight to do the surgury tomorrow that will again allow blood to her kidneys, he identified several areas that need stents from her left leg to her kidneys, I guess he is going to hit them one after the other until he has opened them all, her doctor said that while libby's case is one of the worse he has seen, it isn't the worst that he has worked on. The operation has some extreme risks but he is bringing his entire team with him and he is doing it Pro Bono for the right to publish and document his procedure on her. I asked what the pro bono meant and they said that the surgical team from mayo's is donating their time and skill, I'll have to pay for everything the hospital is involved in but the team from mayo's won't be part of the billing, I think thats kinda good. Her doctor said that he has seen mayo's do that quite often and he wasn't surprised when they stepped up. A medical transport helecopter from minniaplolis will pick them up and bring them in, then take them back. I'm excited for her but scared too. I'll be heading there early tomorrow to be with her, they said she will be out of it all for most of the day and depending on how it all goes they may even choose to stage it out over a series of operations depending on what they find when they have her on the table, I don't know much except what the doctor said.
I am thrilled to hear this good news. In fact, I am so excited that I clapped and applauded - This is wonderful news !!!!!!
Praying for you both tomorrow, as the work is done, and that the results will be more than any of us can imagine.
His Blessings on you.
Keith
What a giant gift! You have the blessing of getting regional experts who focus primarily on these cases to come to you and perform their skills on your wife all for the "right" or opportunity to publish the case! Cody, I would strongly encourage you to sign away the rights to the operation and patient outcomes! That signature is a very small price to pay for such quality care and significantly improve chances of a successful outcome! These folks take serious pride in their abilities, and if they can get an entire team to travel that is even better. You and Libby have been blessed in a major way!
Good luck and God bless!
Grant
Grant is right. You are blessed by God to have such excellent attention. We are praying for both of you.

I thought that the horspital supplied all that as part of their $2.5 million bill. But we can take some, we'll even take some Gorilla Glue, & a Staple Gun! ( I hear these days that's what they use instead of stitches. ;D)
;D BK ;D
They do not use gorilla glue just plane old super glue and bailing wire.

good luck Libby wilma will feel for cody he is where she was
Your comment about super glue may be more truth than you think.
Super glue was invented to close up surgical openings, because it wears off after a few days to a week.
That is why it works so well glueing your skin !!
Something you might not have ever needed to know, but now you do.
I was asked to help develop the glue's delivery mechanism to be used in operating rooms.
Keith
Many surgical sites are now "sutured" with adhesive. It leaves a smaller scar and you do not have to worry about suture/staple removal. Surgical incisions are so much smaller these days due to the use of cameras that the days of numerous sutures are going away.
Do you know the difference between surgical super glue and regular super glue.
about 140 dollars per ounce

That's right. I have 2 packages of 6 tubes of the surgical, errr, I mean MY surgical stuff hanging on my fridge. I use it ALL the time. If it weren't for super glue, I might not have any blood left in me!!
BTW, anyone heard anything from Cody today???

Shes out of surgury, she went in before breakfast and got done around 4 then went straight to dialysis. She tolerated it well, the doctors said it went "picture perfect", they went thru a lot of her arteries and found bad blockages and then put stents, they said she even has them in her legs along with both kidneys, the lead doctor had a name too long for a normal keyboard to type and I pretty much didn't understand a word he said but the nurse said that it will take time for the recovery but in around 3 to 6 months she will be a new person, I'm kinda hoping for J-Lo but not sure yet. I think he said she has 11 of them now. I asked him if he thought it was all done in vein and he just stared at me then looked at his nurse, she was busy spitting a cup of coffee so he thought that was kinda funny but then he looked back at me like I was a busnut or something strange. I'm hoping the bill is shy of the 2.5 million that BK mentioned but I know it's major but if it'll keep her around for a little while longer I'll be happy, well, maybe not happy but still cowed into submission anyway. She isn't back from dialysis yet so I haven't seen her but I'm really thinking she'll be tired and cranky, kinda like normal, thats all I know for now.
Cody,
Glad to hear everything went good. We will keep ya'll in our prayers. Jack

Cody;
Glad to here that things went well for Libby. Remember that just because some one has not responded does not mean they don't care. Some people don't share well, and we don't always know what to say.
I have a prayer team working on you and libby. uh for you and libby.
Hang in there.
Hope to see you both next year.

I talked to libby for a little bit tonight, they have given her a walker and her job was to plod up the hallway, then plod back to her room, she accomplished that feat with time to spare, they did clock her with a calender and her heart rate did elevate but not into uncharted waters, I asked her if she would be coming home with a walker cause I needed to know if I should get one of the local welders to add a bumper on it or not, she doesn't know yet, the doctors haven't said anything about her coming home but I'm confused as to where the turbo goes.
Quote from: cody on December 05, 2009, 06:51:14 PM
I'm confused as to where the turbo goes.
Better not ask Libby.....she might tell you exactly where to put it. ;D
I talked to libby this morning, she is coming home tomorrow, she will still need a lot of help, and the dialysis will continue for a while as her kidneys improve and her activities will be severely limited but her functions have improved 100% with the new blood flow, her creatine levels dropped from 9 and 10 to 1.9, normal is around .05 or so. The stents made the improvement, I can't thank the people here enough for the prayers, I know they were heard, the doctors that did the surgury were not only the best of the best but I think they had some help watching over them, I still have a lot to do to make this place comfortable for her but the doctor said that after 3 to 6 months of recovery she could probably travel again, we're both excited about that. One of the side benefits is that being a dialysis patient automatically qualifies her for medicare, that'll help with any future medical issues but that doesn't kick in for 3 months. The traveling back and forth has taken a toll on the both of us but now we can concentrate on her recovery, she said she feels like a new person but for now she'll keep me. Now the real work begins lol, i've got to design a catapult or a lift to load my chair into the truck for her, that'll also involve getting a taller topper for the truck cause mine is only cab height and a ramp for the house all the happy stuff, I knew she was feeling better when we were discussing all the work that has to be done, she said that after it's all done with she'll probably get hit by a car lol.
Cody, we have never met you guys, buy you both have the best sense of humor and the best outlook on life. We look forward to meeting you both some day. Take care of BOTH of you. God is good. Ruthi
P.S. Merry Christmas!!!
Cody that is great news!

Now about that lift for the chair. Just out of curiosity couldn't you buy or have a platform carrier built that would fit in your receiver hitch? I see them around here like that all the time. Then you could either get a cover made for it or just get a blue tarp and wrap it up good and use about 20 bungee straps to hold it down and around the chair. Just a thought. Should be cheaper than a lift & new topper! (if you remember even a ramp was going to be outrageous $ when we last checked on a light weight one that one person could handle!)

BK,
The problem with the little platform is the chair would get covered in slush, and grit during the winter....
I thought of the same thing, but that is what Cody said. Work fine in the summer, not in the winter.
God bless,
John
BK, I have a tray that would hold the chair, the only problem with that is that in the winter weather up here it gets slopped up so bad with snow and water and slush that it would be hard to keep dry enough to use, even with a tarp they get really bad, I tryed it already with mine and the electrics took a day to dry out after a trip to walmart in the slush. The key is to get the chair inside the truck box. They had an electric lift, kind of like a small crane, at Goodwill a while back but they wanted a grand for it and wouldn't budge or take payments or anything, but it did sell. Those ramps I have for the golf cart may be workable if I can cover them with something like an expanded metal, the lugs are too far apart for the chair wheels, they would fall in between them. I'm looking into a lot of idea's.

OH CAT that is just too funny! I would have expected that out of Cody or Dallas, but sweet little ol' you? NEVER! ;D
The tarp is only for when the chair is on the "lift" not while Libby is riding it! (and no he's not supposed make her ride back there! She needs to be in the truck as always!)

Cody couldn't you get a tarp that would lay on the lift and then drive the chair onto it and then wrap the chair completely to keep the elements out? (trust me I know it'd be time consuming, but just looking out for your wallet! I know it's been on such a diet lately that it looks worse than any anorexic teenage girl ever did! ;D)

It could be done, but with road spray it is pretty hard to keep the electrics dry on it, even with a tight wrap it still seemed to get everywhere.I'm also giving some thought to using a sheet of 1/2 inch pressure treated plywood and hingeing it in the middle lenghtwise and using angle iron for stiffeners and guides for the edges too, lots of ideas flowing along with the coffee lol.
Cody,
What is the Make, Model and weight of the chair? Glad to hear Libby is feeling better.
Bryan
Bryan, I don't have any idea of the weight of the chair but it's a Jazzy 600. I'm thinking the best option is to make a ramp using that sheet of plywood with the hinge in the middle, I measured the opening with the topper liftgate open and the tailgate down it's 40 inches, I can get the chair in it with the seat folded forward so the only problem now is to get the chair onto the tailgate and I'm thinking the plywood with angle iron stiffeners will do that, I just have to come up with an idea on pinning the ramp onto the tailgate to keep the ramp from sliding and dropping. I'll need to find a 6ft heavy duty piano hinge that I can bolt the 2 plywood halves together.
Cody,
Would one of these work for you?

oh yeah forrest green! ;D
Len, I've looked at those but the topper would have to come off or I'd have to get a taller topper to use it, Craig, I've got a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, it's got the 6ft box, or the close to 6ft box that dodge has lol, why don't they make all 8ft boxes the same size and all the 6ft boxes the same size lol. I was just outside poking around in the garage and I found some inch and a half angle iron left over from the rebuilding of my bays that can work as stiffeners for the plywood, so far I've got the plywood, got the angle iron, now if I can find a heavy duty 6ft piano hinge, and someway to keep the ramp from sliding off the tailgate I think we'll have the problem solved lol. I've also got to come up with some kind of traction material thats lightweight for the ramps too, probably some kind of small size expanded metal just to keep the chair from sliding lol, looks like a trip to Menards tomorrow before I pick up libby lol.
Yep it DNR green lol if I had a state seal on the door I could make some ticket money on the side lol.

I built a simple metal crate that I could put my shop wirefeed welder into so I could lift it up into my bus with my engine hoist. I would think if this lift has enough clearance, you
could easily build a cradle for the chair to lift it in and out. Clearance with the topper will the issue, but you might be able to build a platform off the rear of the truck (bumper of hitch mounted)
that you can set the chair on first, then move it into the truck.
Just some brainstorming thoughts.

Ok. Bummer. I have a raised topper on a Chevy 1500 I was going to offer to give you, but it's 8 ft bed.
Here's an idea... take your topper off. Build a simple wall around the bed out of pressure treated 2x4s and pt plywood. Bolt it to the bed, and set the topper on top of it. Simple roof raise! :D
If I can do the ramp, I may not need to go with the raised topper, just got to find a hinge now for it and some kind of hooks to keep it in place.
Cody
Glad to here your problems have changed to just transporting a wheel chair. If you all ready have a platform for your receiver build a 5 sided box with the 6Th folding down to use as a ramp it can be sealed and isn't as high as the bed of the truck much easeaer to lode and unload
Rick 74 MC-8
Cody,
Paula & I are overjoyed that Libby is coming home tomorrow. For lightweight traction material, what about some coarse sandpaper or non slip adhesive backed stuff they sell for running boards, etc.? If you put a piece of angle iron on each side of the folding joint with the 2 angles together and bolt several 4" butt hinges to the 2 pieces of angle iron? Jack
Cody;
great news about Libby, Go find a catapult from an F-15 fighter that should get her where you want her.

Cody,
Glad to hear the great news. Maybe a second bus would be an option ;). Then Libby could still get her bus "fix". My brother just bought an old school bus with a wheel chair lift for his Boy Scout Troop.
Okay, maybe not the best idea but it doesn't take much for my mind to think about justifying another bus.
John
Good News indeed!
I can see it all now, LIbby with a whip to straighten out cody..................Ooops, wrong story! ::)
Paul
Harbor Freight has some reasonably priced lifts that go into the hitch. My parents tried the ramp for their Jazzy into their van. A 7ft ramp and it is a fight to get it in there because of the low clearance of the Jazzy. The slope has to be real slight. We are looking into the lift to get it up to the right level and then roll it into the van. The lift then folds up against the vehicle.

I'll be heading out shortly to pick up the war department, I've got her clothes packed in a paper bag for her to wear home, while digging them out of her dresser I found an envelope, inside the envelope were her wedding rings and instructions to give them to jamie, looks like she didn't think she was coming home, I've got them in my pocket to put back on her somewhat still warm fingers.

I'm so glad she was wrong! ;D

I'm so glad for both of you that Libby's home and on the mend! Just goes to show, you can't keep a good woman down ;D, and someone, SOMEWHERE, figures that we're ALL better off with someone keeping a tight rein on Cody! :D

Cody, You have received a great gift for Christmas. The wife and I are elated for You and Libby. Take care of your lady and Yourself. Regards John and Karla Lacey
Cody,
Jennifer is greatful. I've been sharing what's going on, and she has a deep admiration for both of you. I won't let her read any of the threads though. I don't wanna give her any ideas. I can still out run her.. :o
Merry Christmas. (I'll light another candle on the Menora in her honor..small miracles add up to big ones!)
Doug
Libby being home is such good news.Hugs Peabody
Cody,
Paula & I are so glad to hear Libby is home and mending. What better Christmas gift could you ask for? Give Libby a big hug from us. If we make it to Michigan this summer, ya'll are on our list of places to stop. Just be sure both of ya'll stay out of the hospital! LOL Jack
Jack, the doctors seem to think this is the fix that libby needed, the procedure is pretty new and rare, putting stents in the arteries around the heart has been done for a long time but venturing out into other area's of the body is a new and highly risky procedure, she has enough of them scattered around her body now to put new spring in her walk lol. I already can see a big difference in her color and her energy levels, yesterday wore me out just trying to keep her amused by following her directives that were coming from the big chair in the corner, everything that was within her line of sight had to be dealt with so now there are no living dust bunnies in any of the visable corners, the cob webs have been removed from all the visible ceiling corners, even that dead fly that I've been trying to ignore by the ceiling light fixture is history. I'm giving a lot of thought to turning her chair to face the wall. This morning she brought up the idea of painting the dining room before christmas, I told her to have at it, she could pick between the paint or a ham for christmas dinner, the budget can't handle both, so I'm hoping for the ham lol. I was going to tackle the framing for the ramp a little cause I've still got some material in the garage that needs a home but we've got a storm rolling in that is claiming 6 to 12 inches each day for the next several days so I may get a reprieve on that for a bit but I think this will be a long winter lol.
Cody,
Glad she is home, and doing well. Keep her getting better! ;D
I think we are sending the storm up north. It has "dumped" four inches so far :D. We will probably get up to a foot :o. This was so terrible they had to shut down the schools ;D :D :D ;D.
God bless,
John
You can send it John, we'll deal with it, we call it winter up here lol, I've got the snowblower set to go and all the jeeps and truck winterized and even got the milk crates set up in the vehicles, each vehicle gets a tow strap, jumper cables, starting fluid, a couple cans of Heet, a sleeping bag, extra hat, gloves, shovel, snow brush, candles, box of waterproof matches and a tarp and a good flashlight with extra batteries, I don't just put snow tires on the back, I put them all around all 4 wheels. We rarely need to use the milk crates, thats what holds all the goodies, but in case we do, it's there. We do get a little snow in the winter lol.
Cody
You keep it up there.
You sent it flurries down to Aransas Pass Tx. the other day and we did not ask for them.
Glad to hear that Libby is feeling so much better and is able to start whipping you into shape. No more slacking. ;D
Note: When Cody is slacking, he still runs circles around most of us. Now he will look like the Energizer Bunny on 24 volt batteries and large volumes of Cuban coffee. :o ;D
Here is why he isn't worried about snow, Cody's snow blower:
Looks more like his wheelchair on steroids! ;D
The intersting thing is that I had told libby that I was going to mount a snowblower on the front of my wheel chair and she could push me up and down the driveway, she vetoed that idea lol.
Holy crap Cody, I disappear for a few days and come back to a whole life experience !!!!! Just read the whole saga and am thrilled with the happy ending..talk about a rollar coaster ride !!! We are thrilled at the way this came out for you guys. Figurin' the travel times the docs suggested, you should be good to go for the northeast gtg. Our prayers are still with u , but now they are prayers of thanks. Tell Libby we hope to see her this summer somewhere on the road and she should plan on bringing u with her...

Libby had a minor setback this morning, she was complaining of sharp pain on her lower left side in the back so I took her to the ER and they found that her blood flow is greatly diminished to that kidney, thats one of the areas where she has a brand new stent, so apparently the stent has failed or it's blocked somehow, well anyway, she is on her way to marquette by ambulance to see what the problem is, the doctor feels it is unlikely to be anything major but may possibly be a blood clot formed in it, I asked if it could be a kidney stone but they said that was unlikely, my thoughts were that if it was a kidney stone and the stent served as being rifled, I would think she could be accurate out to 100 yards or more. Anyway, libby told me not to follow until the storm lets up so I'm just sitting and waiting for the phone call to update me.
Cody,
Sorry to hear about the setback :'( :'( :'(. That is too bad. I will keep praying for you...
Good choice to stay home until the storm let's up. It was a doosy down here, and I can't imagine what it would be like up there!
God bless,
John
We are here and praying for you both. I trust this is only a minor setback. At times these things just serve to remind us that we are in HIS Hands.
We will be praying that all will be fine when this tempest in a teapot is over.
Our caring and thoughts are with you.
Hey they do bring her back don't they? ???
;D BK ;D
You guys enjoy each other and the holiday.
John
I too have been gone for awhile, and was actually wondering how Libby was doing. You guys are in my thoughts! Glad to hear things are somewhat better. Any word on what was causing the pain. Sure do hope things are well.
Grant
Cody, what's the status today? Is she home and keeping you in line?
Cody you are starting to worry me. I hope you have some good news for us soon. ???
Lonnie
Libby is back home, just brought her back from the horspistal again, the doctor said that her kidney on that side is inflamed and now she is on medication for that lol, none of my suggestions were even used, I felt so slighted over it all. End result is that in a small percentage of the cases a stent will irritate the surrounding area, kinda like being married lol, so now with the new medications she is on 14 different perscriptions, I asked at the pharmacy when I get free drugs, I'm their best customer.
Cody;
Glad she is home and doing better. When you start getting those free med's let me know there are a few I would like to have. he he he
Tell Libby hi and give here a big hug for me would ya.
Don
Will do, normally I'm reluctant to do that because I'm afraid it'll start something lol.
at lest you under stand where i am coming from, I'm married just like you and there are those day's. uh there For me not her LOL
Don
lol, I just get scared sometimes, 6,7,8 times a day, geeeze, I'm only human lol, oops, I think my alarm clock just went off, time to wake up lol.
LOL Why is it no one ever told me this before? I didn't know I was suppose to save all those drugs till I got married ??? ??? NOW WHAT DU I DOO? That's it, I'll hide in the bus ;D ;D ;D
Cody give Libby a hug for us, and hope the road to recovery is via the Autobahn ;) Van
I really miss the lil' yeller ones :D
