started in the engine compartment?  as in they were towing without disconnecting transmission?

Could be, or they might have been idling the engine to keep the suspension aired up and had a fuel line break.

I've seen more than one tow operator do that rather than hooking the bus up the the tow truck's air system.

Man what a bummer! I know those guys down @ Mann's Towing! (and yes they have been known to take a short cut or 2)
They have 1st class equipment, & should've known the proper way to tow it. They have had plenty of experience over the yrs. (& their prices show it! ;D , when needed I just wait for our local guy to make it there & back in one uncrispy piece!)
