Title: satelite dish
Post by: ruthi on October 13, 2009, 03:43:37 PM
We just had our kvh sate looked at, and one of the boards is out in it, which basically means we have no tv til we get home. Just one more prob. to add to the long list of probs. we have had the last few months.  :-\ That has to be ordered. We have been through several kvhs in the last 10 yrs. It is automatic. We were told by the guy, who has worked on sat dishes on rvs for 30 yrs, that we should go with the winegard automatic. They just came out with one that is 12 in. high. Now, our delima is that the new bus is around 12.5  tall. So, if the dish is 12 inches, that would put it up around 13.7. We were told we could sink it in the roof a few inches, and run a drain hose for water, but, then you have to worry about leaks.Anyone else have one done this way, or have a dish or air cond. that is that tall? We travel mostly main highways and in the southeast areas. I know this has been discussed before, just need to get this figured out before we jump in there, and wish we hadnt.

Ruthi,
I thought you had a left the very front part of yer bus stock height(under 12') purposely for the sat dish?
I know that a stock Dina will clear a 12' shop door as we used to do it all the time! Not much extra room, but a little! FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

If the bus is 12 1/2 feet tall and the dish is 12" high you'll be right at the 13'6" max height.  Semi trucks travel all the time at 13'6".

That was the original plan, then, we decided we would just put the A 7, 6 inch tall dish on the top, and we would still be under, or right at 13. But, now we are being told that the A 7 is not the way to go. Dunno what to believe. We were told that if the 12 volt receiver on the A 7 goes out, it is 500 dollars to replace it. And, he said that you always have to be cleaning the dirt off of it and moisture. Wish I had the opinion of others on it.  The front of the bus was fiberglassed and starts  about 2 foot back and slants to the taller area.

I agree on the A7 for dirt and moisture, especially rain. I've viewed some other boards and they say the same thing.

I've read that Winegard is the system of choice, at least for now. There is always something new coming out, as you buy one, a better one shows up.

We have an older KVH LM and shudder to think what to do if it fails. Might go with a dish on a tripod to get us by.

Report back on what you end up doing and your level of satisfaction.
