Title: 4104 manuals on line
Post by: Len Silva on October 04, 2009, 05:10:17 PM
I have posted the 4104 Maintenance Manual, Parts Book, and Operators Manual here:
http://www.manuals.lenstudio.com/ (http://www.manuals.lenstudio.com/)

These are from a CD I bought on eBay a few years ago, so I don't know the source or if there are any copyright issues with me posting them.  I will leave them there unless someone complains about it.

It's none of my business Len but my wife was the copyright cop for our provincial technical institute for about 10 years so this is kind of 2nd nature to me.

Copyright is very simple.  If you didn't create it and you don't have explicit written permission from whoever did create it and it doesn't say that its OK to distribute it then its not OK to distribute it.  The question of whether or not anybody will ever make an issue of it is a whole 'nuther matter.

Len, I was told by my attorney ( the daughter) that when a Corp files bankruptcy and no one buys the copywrite there is no protection for the previous copywrite.
I got into this on some Eagle manuals and found out the new Eagle owners in Brownsville had no rights only on the new ones he had the copywrite on and since you are part owner of GM now I would not worry about it

good luck

"since you are part owner of GM" is more of a political statement than a legal one. The public at large has not gained the ability to use GM's property free-of-charge.

I'll believe your daughters legal opinion, if it applies. There remains that little detail of researching whether the copyright was actually abandoned or is included in the purchased assets of the new corporation.

I am looking for installation instructions for Sheppard power steering specific to the GM PD 4104 coach. Any info you might share would be much appreciated!

It's available here for $25.00.

Unfortunately, I gave mine away when I sold the bus, wish I had kept a copy.

Is GM or any entity related to GM still selling 4104 manuals?  Does Coachinfo.com have written permission from GM to sell copies of the manuals, or did they buy up a stash of original 4104 manuals?

If GM is no longer selling 4104 manuals and they haven't granted a license to someone else who is still selling them then I see no issue with someone posting them online.  The copyright holder isn't exactly getting hurt if they are no longer offering the product for sale.  This is a product manual for something that has been out of production for many years.

It would be different if this was a song, book, manuscript, or similiar.

I really wasn't all that concerned about the copyright thing.  I just figured that if I didn't mention it in my post, someone else would have.

The manuals I have for my 4104 and 671 engine that are in electronic format are my original manuals that I scanned in myself.

I have them at the following link for anyone to download at no charge.

Thank you for sharing the manuals.  GM Truck and Coach is as dead as Oldsmobile and I would be shocked in these materials were not in the public domain.
