Title: Best RV washer /dryer for the money?
Post by: johns4104s on September 13, 2009, 01:32:07 PM
We may be looking for a washer/Dryer in the future. Can you guys recommend any model? If I can get a compact one I will not need a trailer.

Thanks

John

John, the combo units like Splendide,LG,Samsung, Haier another use the condensing method to dry and it will take hours to dry your clothes.
If you have space go with small stackable units.
Sonja loves her Splendide but she hangs the clothes out or in the Texas wet weather we will dry in the big dryers in a laundromat and hers is vented the ventless type are even worse on drying time, plus they use a lot of water.

good luck

John,
We fulltime and my wife insisted on a 220v dryer so we got  Bosch stackable units. We had them for over six years and my wife loves them.We also have a pullout tray in between the two units which is really handy.

Why not a Propane dryer or will it empty the tanks in no time?  220 volt anything really limits your choice of campgrounds unless you want to run your genny.  Many of the campgrounds off the beaten path will only have 30 amp and sometime only 15 or 20 amp service.

Now, ignore me if you stay in the resort type campgrounds all the time.

Luvrbus,

Could you explain how the condensing method of drying clothes? I have done a dozen searches but very little specifics.
Remember it took me a while to understand reverse cycle refrigeration..

I am thinking that the difference in dryer temp and the cooling fins(cooled by water) will condense out water.   That maybe fine for ground water @ 58*F, {Forget Paris Tx. in the summer} but with ambient temp water in the bay it could be 85*F or higher.
I am guessing that this will extend the cycle greatly.

Thanks back to the searches..   I do have a Splendide and have never used the unit, Boss said make sure it works so I am here to learn.

Paris Tx summer time water comes from Mays Lake, just north, very shallow lake, and approaches 80 -85*F in summer. Worked there on/off 20 yrs ago. Great place.

I have a Splendide Vented version 2000 series.

It takes forever to dry with the heater they have inside, kind of like a medium
sized hair dryer and about the same wattage (1,500 watts or so).

Not only that it also takes a long time to do a small load of wash since the washer is only good for about 10 lbs and then 3 hours to dry. Covenient YES
but if you need to depend on them full time they are slow. I think mine was
rated at using 66 gallons a load.

I understand that the non-vented uses almost 2 times as much water due
to the evaporative condensing system they use. Have never looked at the
non-vented ones after I saw the water usage was way higher.

They are great for short loads and weekends but not if you need lots of clothes done fast.

I had to break down and buy a large-large front load Bosch machine that sits on the barn now next to a 30lb commercial gas dryer that works faster than the washer can keep up. My wife says that the next time I find a deal on another top load machine that she would prefer that to the bosch that takes 39 minutes to 2 hours to do a load. So much for progress.....

Dave,

Was that 66 gal, every use of the dryer ?  WOW,    I got to get familiar with the dryer I have, I did not purchase, nor install. I would imagine OTR, I would be using it for Tee shirts, sox & undies, mostly light stuff. I do have a vented exhaust, so I do not believe I would have the excessive water usage.

BTW, I have the MayTag front loader, and the Miss's would have rather had the top loader. Water in my area is quite a bit more expensive than most places. I purchased the MT as they are light on water usage. Tend to mildue the frt door gasket if the door is not left open.

Thanks,

We have a Spendide 2000 non-vented. Would not buy another one. We bought it used, $250. Like has been said, takes forever to dry. Becky uses it for her dainty stuff, just hangs it up to dry anyway.  ::)

I would buy a stackable combo if it were me. You can find them in 120v.

I think the wash specs are 66 gallons for a load of wash. The Condensing dryer part uses another 33 gallons if I remember the brochure. It also takes considerably longer to dry using the condense method.

The washer spin @1200 rpm is pretty good and slings a lot of the water out. Our clothes would come out only slightly damp and not dripping and the option for extra spin is better.
( of course it does shake the bus too!! ) Those spins are very violent if they get out of balance. Shakes the dishes out of the cabinets  ;) ;D ::) :o

wow thats a lot of water, wonder why? our spendide unvented only uses about 12 gallons per load, we just bought the vented one cause the drying cycle does take longer than we like but we don't use any where close to that amount of water.

We took our stacked washer and dryer out and replaced it with liquor and bar supplies on the top part and installed a dish washer in the bottom part. The washer used  way too much water and the dryer took for ever to dry. washing dishes by hand takes 5 times more water than the dishwasher. We love the new setup. we have a place to put dirty dishes until we have a full load and a nice little liquor cabinet.

I just looked up our Splendide Combomatic 6200, I miss spoke and said it was a 2000, wrong! The amount of water they show is 7.5-16 gal. per hour.

We had an Equator ventless combo once.  Did about 13 pounds at a time and that was fine.  It used very little water for the wash cycle.  I loved to hear it rev up at the 1200 rpm.  I did not mind the dryer taking a long time, but it used a lot of water for the condenser unit.  You could only reasonably use one of these if you are hooked to water.  Vented would probably be okay.  The other problem we had is that nobody worked on them.  I once found someone that did, but he really did not know what he was doing.

I like bobsw answer. We have a dishwasher but seldom use it. The wife makes me wash dishes by hand every night but I showed her your post and she indicated we might try it. There are only two of us so it takes a while to fill the dishwasher up.
