Title: LED lights on trailer and vehicle flasher
Post by: belfert on September 09, 2009, 07:04:14 AM
I bought an LED light for my trailer yesterday.  The salesguy was concerned that it might not flash properly if I replaced a standard light with this.  Wouldn't the flasher in the vehicle see a higher amp load than normal and work just fine?  My bus is getting LED flashers so this would not be an issue when towed by the bus.

The vehicle would surely see a much lower load, not higher. There are plenty of devices for restoring the correct flash rate when using LED lights (see here as an example: http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/NEW_LED_LIGHT_ACCESSORIES.html (http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/NEW_LED_LIGHT_ACCESSORIES.html)). I haven't any experience myself in this area, and I suspect many people get away with simply fitting the LEDs and doing nothing else. The easiest thing would seem to be to install the new light and see what flash rate you get - if it is too high then you can investigate the best solution.

Belfert, if you have the electronic flasher they adjust automatic to the load no matter how many or what type lights if not buy one for 20.bucks

EF12 for 12volt system
EF24 for the 24 volt system

good luck

Let me explain my thought further:

If my vehicle has incandescent lights and the flashers work correctly without a trailer, wouldn't adding trailer lights add more load to the flasher thus not affecting the flash rate?  My bus actually has a Modulite so I guess it doesn't matter what lights the trailer has as the bus is powering a relay inside the Modulite.

I can't believe a lot of trailers would come with LED lights if they negatively affected the tow vehicle.

Belfert, it makes no difference to EF flashers what type light you have mixed or match they will flash the same as per DOT standards
.Example look at trucks on the road do you think they change flasher for each different trailer equipped with incandescent or LED 's one flasher covers all

good luck

I already have electronic flashers on the bus, one for each direction.  They are Grote.  I called Grote tech support and they said the model I have should work with LEDs.  They don't work.  One side has more LED lights than the other and that side flashes faster than the other.

I called Grote again and they have an LED fasher that is pin compatbile with what I have.  I have two on order.
