Don has suggested changing out my compressor while the engine is out. It is still working but it is very old and would be extremely difficult to get to once the engine is in place. The one in there now is a #500, which I am told is obsolete, and should be upgraded to a newer version. This one is a lie-down model (lies to the left looking backward). I have come across a #700 off a 6V71 that is a stand-up unit. We think it will not fit because of the limited head room in an MC5a engine room. However, with the engine out, it is difficult to tell. Does anyone know for sure whether a stand-up would fit or not? What would be the model #on an updated compressor anyway?

I was looking at the engine and the throttle linkage is also in the way, so we will need a lay down compressor
Don
Well then, this one is on Ebay cheap if anyone needs it. Auction is almost over.

I would suggest a new or rebuilt/reman compressor if you are going to do a changeout. Why replace your current unit with an unknown used one? i would choose a reputable rebuilder.
That one on Ebay looks pretty rough for a reman. Maybe they did an outstanding job on the mechanicals, but most remans tend to be repainted.
Yeah Brian,
I was looking at that one since it was a reman a per the tag. It was old stock though. But, as Don said, it would not work. The interesting thing is that the prices I had gotten yesterday on the correct reman compressor were over $700 with exchange. However, I called MCI today. Their price was $770, but give $370 back when they get the core. I was surprised that MCI would beat out the others like that.
Wonder if you can buy the one on eeebay for a hundred bucks an turn in 2 cores and 30 cash ;D just a thought
MCI can really be surprising on some prices. Most of us tend to check everywhere but MCI and assume their prices will be high when they sometimes are really low.
Others have reported they could side their houses with MC9 windshields from MCI as the price is so low.
Lin,
I bought a rebuilt from these guys.

Not a single problem and so have others.
They will rebuild your core, if they don't have one in stock.
Compare there prices to what you have been quoted!

Cliff,
Thanks for the source. They had one in stock and were even cheaper than MCI.
Well, how much!?
MCI, which I thought was a bargain, was $400. including shipping with exchange. REI was $289 plus shipping which I'm guessing is about $30- $40, also with exchange, of course.
