We are again gathering for a weekend of camping, cocktails, leef peeping, eating Craig's beer-butt-chicken, and perhaps even sampling some of his homemade wine and beer. There will also be the required tire kicking and telling of conversion lies.
Everyone is invited. Maybe you early departing snowbirds can stop in on your way south.
We will gather Sept 25, 26 and 27 (Fri, Sat and Sun).
The location is still being decided, but will again be in the area north of Hinckley and south of Duluth. Unless we find a much better spot elsewhere. We will try to nail down the location in the next week and post it back here.
thats the same weekend as BK's rally
I've been thinking about BK's rally that weekend, but a Minnesota rally would certainly be less expensive to attend.

I would love to be in TN that weekend, but unfortunately, this trip to CO and WY has put a crimp in my unemployed wallet, and while the unemployed part is changing next week, I have to make this trip again in December, so I think I'm going to have to stay close to home for awhile.

OK, here is the promised info on this years site. We have moved a short distance from where we were last year.
This year we will be at the Moose Lake City Campground, on Sept 25, 26 and 27. They are located on 4th Street and Birch Avenue, between the lake and the high school. Their phone number is 218 485-4761. Please mention that you are with the Bus-Nuts when you call.
The sites are nice and level, with electric and water hookups for 24.00 a night. Sites with sewer hookups are also available, and of course there is a dump station there.
We walked through the campground tonight, and it is nice and quiet. The camp ground sits right on the lake. It is a smaller campground, but since it will be later in the year, most of the seasonal folks will be gone. There will also be a small group of Holiday Ramblers staying there at the same time. Our block of sites will be very close to the shower and bathroom building, which was very clean when we checked them out. There are also tent camping sites available.
Being next door to the school, there is a nice playground close by. And 1 block out of the campground is the bike trail system that will offer many miles of nice riding on the different trails.
On the other side of the campground is the City Park, which has a nice swimming beach with changing and rest rooms.
We have set aside a block of sites at the back of the camp ground. They do not take credit cards, but will take your reservation and hold your spot for you, and you can pay them when you arrive.
I have been asked about the meals; are there pot luck meals; what is needed etc. Please give us a few more days, and we will have something worked out. This is pretty laid back, so i know it will all work out just fine. If i missed something, or if you have questions or suggestions, please let me know.
I'll call them soon to reserve the space for us.
As for meals, I'm up for making beer butt chickens one night, if you want. Just let me know so I can get the chickens. I can do 3 chickens in my roaster.
craig
Thats great news Craig! That works out perfect, as i think we have someone bringing baked beans to go with them. I will let you guys know what is up as soon as Deb and i can get the rest worked out. We need to talk to Don and Sue too and see what they are planning.
Hey gang,
Is this the town of Moose Lake just southwest of Duluth??
If so, count the Barron Family in...
Mr Diehl and Fred are you guys gonna make the trek??
I'll see if I can get Billy McLaughlin to bring his bus and we'll bring a PA and do a little music for Y'all.
If that's okay with the folks in charge that is...
Lookinf forward to it...
Rick
We're going to be in Bayfield,WI thurs thru Sunday that weekend. It's a nice venu also.
I'll start doing some planning, but it's too early to tell what the hec we're doing yet, but the drive would be nice , not too far. Plus I could bring you some beer for that chicken Craig.
Grant
Welcome Barrons! Yes, the location is Moose Lake which is right on !-35 about 30 miles south of Duluth. Mea culpa. I should have mentioned that in the first place. The music sounds awesome if you guys can work that out. We are looking forward to seeing all of you.
Also all you Northern Minnesota types, the Diehls and us will be at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag, MN Thursday - Saturday of Labor Day weekend. (www.rollag.com (http://www.rollag.com)) in case you're interested in smelling some real coal and steam and chaff. Its quite the gathering and we've been known to enjoy a microbrew or two in the evenings after riding the steam train.

Grant, if you are able to make it, bring me a couple bottles each of Butter Ripple Schnapps and Sour Puss Green Apple Schnapps. We can't buy them down here. Ask Mark and Donna about it
if you are not familiar. They introduced us to a special treat with them which we will share with the group. :P
Hope you can make it.
Good Morning, Craig, I hope we can make it , sounds like there might be a demand for a load to run the border, if we come I sure will bring some. Might have to fill a water tank, haha
I wanna know why you guys keep calling Craig a "Beer Butt Chicken"???
That's not very nice. He seems alright to me :) ;) :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Rick,
My guess is that you have not tasted Craig's delicious beer but chicken. Some of the best chicken I have ever ate. Jack
Hey Grant, if you make it down and still have a bit of room left under the dinette, i would really appreciate 2 bottles of the Butter Ripple too. Craig, i found the Sour Puss Green Apple in Cloquet, so it is around here, but no sign at all of the Butter Ripple.
Hope to see you guys in a month!
Don and Sue, and Deb and I spent the long weekend at Wm O'Brian (Brian and Hillary, we almost expected to find you guys down by the river, or riding by on bikes). It looks like we may nail the fall color this year, as the early turners are starting. Deb is worried that all the leaves will be gone by then, but i am sure that won't happen. As far as the menu goes, we did start to discuss it, but got side tracked. I remember that Fri will be just left pretty open, as people will arrive at different times. So i hope Craig can do the bb chicken for Sat night. Sound OK Craig? I will chk back with Deb and Sue and see what else we can decide.
John.
We must have just missed you... we were in Taylors Falls but we drove up the Wisconsin side (road on the Minnesota side is a "thump-Thump" road). We reserved a site and are looking forward to it!!

Sounds good to me. What's the head count?
Hi John,
We would also like to know how many to plan for when you have a number. We will be bringing baked beans for Saturday night. Will we need to contribute to other meals or snack times? We have our reservation made and hope to arrive Friday afternoon. I don't drink alcohol in any form but my wife will drink a glass of wine. Would you like us to bring some wine or root beer and ice cream for floats? We are looking forward to the rally.
Thanks, Sam and Charlet Sperbeck
How soon do I have to let you folks know if I am coming or not? Are they going to run out of sites? I would only be able to show up Saturday around 6 pm and then head home by noon Sunday. I need to have the bus back home Sunday afternoon to start loading for a trip leaving the following Tuesday.
I will be in Albert Lea Saturday until 2 pm and then heading up to Moose Lake if I go. I still have 15 things to do on the bus before my big trip, but I really want to have everything done by the 20th so I am not finishing things an hour before we leave like the past two years.

Ooooo! Ice cream floats sound good. Chocolate ice cream and Coke, or vanilla and root beer. :P

Call the number and make a reservation for a spot for Saturday night. If it's just you, don't worry about it. There will be plenty of food. If you're bringing friends, it would be good to have a bit of notice, but not absolutely necessary.
We'll probably eat dinner around 6 on Saturday, I would expect, but if you're late, there will probably be leftovers.
Rick, i know what you mean about the thump-thump road. Have you any more news on the music?
Sam, the beans sound great, as does the root beer floats (vanilla ice cream)! LOL Friday night, everyone should just plan on their own meal due to the different arrival times. You may beat us to the camp ground Fri. I think we (Don, Sue, Deb and I) can do the breakfast on Sat, although they won't know that until they read this. Chicken and beans for Sat night. No ideas have come forth for Sunday as of this time, but we are open to any and all suggestions.
We really don't want to get too organized, so i am sure it will all work out.
Brian, we have one end of the campground so space should not be a problem. Go ahead and call the campground and let them know you are going to be there Sat night.
Again, if i hear more info on meals or menus, i will let you all know.
cya soon.

My concern is if they will run out of spots if I wait another week or so to decide if I want to go. If I don't get the work done on my bus I can't go as I will be busy finishing things up for my big trip leaving on the 29th.
Don't worry Brian, there will be a spot for you!
The Diehl family has completed a reservation for Friday and Saturday nights. We will be there!
Okay, what more is needed for food on Saturday? Do we need to bring bread or brownies or buns ... etc?
Brian, glad to hear you and the family are coming. Stand by - Deb and Sue have been working on the grocery list. Deb will have it posted soon.

Corn might be good, and is still in season. Or possibly potatoes. We could bake them.
Hello All!!
We are so happy to see so many bus nuts (and friends) are coming to Moose Lake, we are looking forward to seeing everyone. We've been asked about the food, and this is what we've come up with so far:
Friday night: Since everyone will likely be arriving at different times, lets just say on your own, we'll have a fire going, so if you want to bring hot dogs or whatever to cook, go for it! Also, lets have a "potluck" snacks for around the campfire that night.
Saturday morning: Sue and I will plan on making and bringing five egg bakes, John has volunteered to cook waffles for everyone to go with them. If everyone else can bring breakfast foods to go with it, like juices, muffins, fruit, rolls, etc, that would be great.
Saturday lunch: on you own
Saturday Dinner: Craig volunteered to bring and cook three of his AWESOME beer butt chickens. Someone has volunteered to bring baked beans, so the rest of us can fill in the rest, if you have an idea what you'd like to bring maybe you can post a quick note so others will know what you're thinking.
Sunday morning: We thought we can have a group breakfast, everyone can bring something to share.
At this point, the head count is about 20 people, with the possibility about 5-10 more, who are still maybes.
I hope this helps in your planning, we are open to any suggestions/ideas you have!
We are really looking forward to this bus weekend! Can't wait to see you all! only 15 days now!!, but who's counting?!
John,
Are you bringing a gas grill? I was thinking you had one there last year.
With that many people, we better plan on a couple more chickens.
I have a double chicken holder, but would need a grill. I could use my little bbq grill on the camp stove. They don't fit in there very well, but I have done them in there in the past. I might have a small portable gas grill in the shed, too. Will look for it.
craig
If I come I have a full size gas grill in the bus.

Thanks, but it won't work for us if you don't get there till 6:00. Takes an hour to cook the chickens.
Craig, i just talked to Sue, and they have a small one on their bus. I cannot remember how your setup works. Does the entire rack have to fit under the lid of the barbque, or are you just looking for a constant heat source. This one will be too small to enclose the rack with its own cover.

For the double, I would need a grill that the two chickens could fit under the cover. Remember they are standing up.
I can make my small BBQ grill work. I've used it before. It just leaves a little skin on the inside of the lid :)
We will bring potatoes to bake for Saturday dinner. I don't think we can bake all the potatoes in our oven at one time though. Does anyone else have a working oven to help cook the potatoes in? We will also bring sour cream, cheese, etc for toppings on the potatoes.
We are still considering what to bring for breakfast. Will post back later when we have that figured out.
I have an oven in the bus, but maybe we can do them on the grill, along with the chicken, or in the camp fire. Bring aluminum foil if you have some. I'll try to remember to put some in, too.
Hey All,
Can I do blueberry and strawberry pancakes one of the mornings?? We are not sure what to bring for the potluck part. How about some home made fresh salsa and chips and some cheese, crackers and summer sausage? smoked salmon... appetizer type stuff.
Billy Mc cannot make it but I'll bring my PA and guitar.
rick
I talked to "beer butt" Craig and Lea and I are going to bring some ribeye's and we'll prepare them using my secret, highly classified, "I could tell you how I do it but then I'd have to kill ya" recipe ( it's rare to medium rare so if you like your steak well done you might wanna pass or throw it back on when we're not looking!!) and I was thinking after their done i'll cube them and you can grab a toothpick and have a few bites while we're waiting for the chicken to roost!! I mean roast...
Wouldn't want to ruin any appetities for the worlds greatest chicken chef extraordinaire.
Monsieur Gumpster....
I am so looking forward to meeting some of you and reconnecting with others...
This is gonna be a hoot!!!
Rick
You know, I was just thinking about how much wine I should bring. Any idea how much Debbie is going to drink this year?
Here's a picture of last year's gathering. Anyone care to guess which one is Debbie? ::)
You are all heart Craig LOL. Wish I could make it.

Hey John,
Yeah, I wish you could too. You'd like this group of busnuts. They're fun to be around.
craig
Craig, , , last year, didn't we use an open burner for the chicken? Can't remember how they were covered up. Maybe a tin foil tent would work.
Rick, the "appetizers" sound great. Also, if you guys want to do the pancakes on Sun, that would work real well too. Just let the group know. I am looking forward to the live music.
We might have a movie one night also. You guys all need to talk nice to Don and Sue for that. We did a "bedsheet" movie night up in Ely and it worked out real well.
Well, it sure sounds like none of us will be going home hungry after this weekend! Hey Deb, it looks like about 12 more nights - right?
John,
I have an open burner for the 3 chicken cooker I have. I just need to find something for the other two chicken cooker. I think we're going to need 5 chickens if we have 20 people coming. I'm pretty sure I can use my little bbq unit on my camp stove.
craig
Craig...you're a SICK man...lol...
as for the amoun ...hmmm...that would depend on what flavors.. possibly raspberry??? (I think that bottle should have my name on it!)
I'm so excited for the weekend, looking forward to seeing everyone!
All the "menu" plans sound GREAT everyone!!
John Z~ yep, 12 sleeps and counting....
Brian and Hilary-
we have an oven on our bus too, but I like the idea of on a grill or in the fire! It works well to wrap them in foil and throw right in the coals.
Deb
Sounds great! Maybe we will do some in the fire and some in the oven. We will try to bring a bag of nice small sized potatoes so people can enjoy them, but still have room for all the other great food!
John,
Let me know if you need a projector and screen for the movie. Between my Church and Lea's work we have access to that kind of stuff.
What's the story on campfire wood?
So many places won'yt let you bring outside wood in. Just wondering
Rick
I didn't see anything posted about firewood at the Moose Lake city campground when we were there checking it out, so it must be ok to bring our own; I know they have that rule at the state and national forest campgrounds, but didn't hear anything about it there. :)
I hear there's a whole bunch of dead ash around the cities. ;)
It's getting closer!!
Only ONE week left before "The Northern Minnesota Fall Color Bus Nuts Campout!!!"
The leaves are looking like they might just perfect for our weekend!!
There's still plenty of room at the campground!! We'd love to have you!
See ya soon!
Hi John,
Would you or someone else post directions to the campground from I35, including the exit name or number? We will be coming from the south on I35 sometime Friday. We are looking forward to the rally.

What are you trying to say, BK?
Well, we just got home from the gathering in Moose Lake, and as usual, it was incredible! What a fine bunch of people we have in this ridiculous hobby. We had 7 buses show up, a small sticks and staples motorhome that the owner had done an incredible frame up restoration on and one small camper trailer. Some arrived later than expected, but in time for dinner. We could not have asked for better weather on Saturday, and spent the day recovering from Friday night (well, some of us did) and playing show and tell all day. We ended the day with a wonderful potluck dinner which we capped off with some wine and music. This morning was pancakes and bacon and everyone eventually packed up and headed their separate ways.
Sorry, the only photos I took were of some ideas I got from Sam and Charlet's new MC8 conversion. I'm sure some of the others will post some of their photos (be nice Debbie! ::) )
Can't wait till next year!

There was some talk going around on Sat that a couple folks may have come down with B1R1 virus (bus rally virus, induced by home made wine) on Friday night, but there was no concrete evidence to support the claims!

It was an incredible weekend! The weather stayed clear for us in spite of forecast rain for the weekend. Thank you to everyone for coming and sharing in the meals. So nice to meet new folks and always nice to get together with old friends. Mark your calendars now so you don't forget. We talked to the manager about reserving the same end of the campground again next year for our 3rd annual event. We again are having it on the last weekend of Sept. Craig mentioned maybe having a tent for us just in case the weather does throw us a curve ball.
We will meet at the same place again, although i do hope they get those trenches between my bus and the restrooms filled in by then!!! Also there was some talk about maybe getting up there a day or two earlier. We can all talk about that later on. Again - thanks to everyone for a GREAT weekend!
Northern Minnesota Campout for Bus Nuts - 3rd Annual
September 24, 25 & 26, 2010
You got it Gump!!!
Heck, the "stray electric protons focused by an open bay door" theory is easier to believe than those pumpkins!
The pumpkins did indeed have different faces this year..
be nice?? after last year...whats it worth to you?? remember that pay back I talked of a year ago...LOL
Oh-it was such an AWESOME weekend!! THANK YOU to everyone that came and made it so great! and the weather couldnt have been much better!

Mark
You guys did miss (and were missed) a great weekend!
Sure hope you can make it next time!!
Come on Donna!!
:)
We were sad to come home, jealous of Sam and his 8v92, full of chicken, half full of rasberry wine (just kiddin'), all of us in the Barron clan are thinkin we had a great time making great memories with Y'all.
Still kinda mad at Brian Diehl for telling us all his MPG on the way to camp. 10 or 11 Whassup with that??? I'm thinkin we should do a steroid test on hic Cummins ISC!!!!LOL.
Lookin forward to when we're all together again and tomorrow wouldn't be too soon.
Craig's beer butt chicken was all it was "cracked" up to be! (sorry i couldn't resist)
Serious thanks go out to John and Debbie for making the suggestion for those of us that couldn't make the long trek to Tennessee why not get together in our neck of the woods.
Mucho grande love to all who were in attendance from:
Grace, Sam, Lea, Rick and Nicah (our dog) Barron 'til next year, may you all be happy and healthy, and driving your bus with a perpetual tailwind.... God Bless
Tooo many bad pumpkins for pictures????????????
Hi All,
Charlet and I also had a great time at the rally. Thanks to the hosts, all the cooks for wonderful food, the attendees for showing their buses, and all the children for being so well behaved. I really enjoy the small rallies more than the big ones because you get to visit with everyone. We met a lot of new people and everyone made us feel very welcome.
Thanks again everyone, Sam Sperbeck
PS: Rick, I may have to stock up on bibs to pass out so you won't drool all over our 8V92TA next time.

Yeah, you could have spit shined that 8V92. Heck, I think you could have spit shined your entire bus!
Sam, I was so glad to see you guys there, and just thrilled when I saw your new toy and heard the story. Thanks for coming, and make sure you put it on your calendar for next year. Also, the gathering at Devin and Amy's in Bemidji is usually the last weekend in July.
craig
OK you guys. So we were over in Bayfield, WI area and it was nice there too. But there was only one other bus in "our" group and it is a schoolie. So that was pretty good. We'll have to see if we can change our arrangement in order to be at James Cooke state park instead. Sounds like the kind of great time that I could enjoy. And how convenient to have a world class bus rally right here in in Minnesnowta!!
Sorry we missed you all and heres hoping for better planning on our part next September.
Fred
We had such a great time last weekend. It was fun to see all the buses, meet new friends and catch up with friends from last year. The only pictures we took were at the campfire on Saturday when Rick was singing and playing the guitar (it was awesome)! Kudos to John and Debbie for their outstanding planning capabilities we can't wait until next year!

I got this today. Now I understand!!
John, you and I were having a stroke on Friday night!!!
Everyone missed the signs! Rick even left when we started slurring our sentences.
We're lucky we made it through that. No wonder I had a headache the next morning. It wasn't the leaking protons
after all!

INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW...........................
Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a
Fourth Indicator, the Tongue
I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!
STROKE:Remember the 1st Three Letters....ST.R.
My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word.
I agree.
If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.
Seriously..
Please read:
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e.. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.
Hey Gump, i am not sure about the stroke theory, cuz although some of our words got slurred, i seem to remember you were smiling a whole lot! I still give credence to the sitting by the open bay door wich focused the stray protons right into the old head. But it will be a good topic for next year. Who knows whos turn it will be to wear the pumplin hat then?
Hey guys, it sure is nice to see "Me Too!" on the board! Welcome.
I am up in the Red River Valley driving for the beet harvest, but so far, we have only been able to dig one day. Rain has had us sitting for the last two days. This year our shift starts at 2 in the afternoon, so maybe we can get to work today. I sure am enjoying the memories of the rally... well not so much Saturday morning, but all the rest! Next years rally can't some soon enough for me!
I promise....
photos are coming... I didn't forget...
me and computers....grrrr...

Nice pics! Thanks for the time it took to do them!
I know it is hard to find time to take them, then to remember who/what and tag them as posting them!
;D BK ;D
Thanks, Debbie.
God bless,
John
Thanks Deb,simple marvelous pics :),Good job!
Well now that I've seen photographic evidence, I'll have to see what can be done to move our Bayfield weekend. We have been going to Bayfield the last weekend in September for five years. Two of us with busses and two with trailers. Now we'll have my MCI and Troy's Eagle so there might be something to negotiate.
How about trying Bayfield next year?
Fred

I've never been to Bayfield. I'm not opposed to it but this is John and Debbie's shindig.
I'm hoping to go up on Thursday next year and make it a 4 day weekend. Or maybe a whole week.
I really liked this campground at Moose Lake. Very quiet and informal. But I wouldn't be opposed to trying new places every year.
BTW, Debbie, you were not very kind with the photos!
(BTW, Debbie, you were not very kind with the photos!)
Hmm...I thought I was VERY kind --considering the pumpkin pics from last year...
and that's only about 1/4 of the pics... LOL

You just can't let that pumpkin thing go, can you :D
Ok, you can hold the threat of more photos over my head because there's a brief period of time that I can't recall everything and I concede it's possible
you might hold some compromising evidence....
However, next year, I may just have to bring extra raspberry wine and get my camera out, too 8)
Deb, the pictures look great all organized and captioned like that. I think you have earned the title of "Event Photographer"! Thanks for the great effort. As to the pumpkin/wine/memory lapse/picture thing - i am staying way out of this! I want no part of it!!! LOL Besides, Craig told me that i probably suffered a stroke that Friday night so how could i be expected to recall anything. Craig, glad to hear you might come up early next year,, we are planning on doing the same thing.
Hey! You earned it!
Think we should have annual "sick pumpkin" awards??
You may have started a tradition with the pumpkins...
The double trophy holders for the year are Craig and John!
who will they pass it to next?
