Title: Good news! Crankshaft seal replaced!
Post by: steve5B on August 19, 2009, 07:47:02 PM

   Hello everyone,

Previous post, I had fuel seeping from my crankshaft seal and had it replaced today.  If you are wondering why "FUEL FROM

THE CRANKSHAFT SEAL"  The engine had a crossover line broken and replaced.  Filled the engine with fuel, and oil filter also.

Changed the oil and NO FUEL IN THE CRANKCASE, but seeping through the seal.  Oil filter wasn't replaced (overlooked) so

that's where it was coming from, replaced and Now, oil was seeping through the seal.  So I took it in and the local diesel

shop fixed it, and now EVERYTHING IS Great!!!!!!!  The local DD shop wanted close to $3300.00 to fix it.  Get this!, got it

replaced, seal cost $20.00 2hrs labor and 8qts of oil that was lost driving to the shop.   FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF $193.14

This tells me, HOW MUCH I WAS TAKEN FOR IN THE PAST FROM THE WORK I HAD DONE LAST WINTER WHEN THEY COULDN'T

FIND THE PROBLEM (SEE PREVIOUS POST ABOUT FUEL IN THE OIL)  So now, I can start the conversion!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, That is good news, now go have some real fun! ;D

Sure goes to show that doing your own work is a good thing. Of course they have overhead to pay and your labor is pretty cheap!

Way to go,

Paul

OK if you paid them $200.00 per hour for 2 or 3 hours that's only $600.00. Just what do they base the cost on to come up with $3300.00.  Wait it must take 30 hours at $120.00 per hour.  My god if fixing a engine costs that much I don't stand a chance.

Steve
I pray your troubles are over, Large radial piston airplane engines have what is called oil dilution systems that pump fuel into the oil to lower the viscosity for cold weather starts. They work but come with their own set of troubles. Most operators disable them and use preheaters instead. When your oil is diluted it reduces the lubricating properties and can cause some bearing troubles. I don't how far you drove it if at all with the oil diluted? Another factor to consider is 100LL avgas evaporates from the oil much faster than diesel will.

Bottom line don't start celebrating until you have put a couple thousand miles on it.

Steve, the shops up here are a real treat too, when I called the DD shop, local but still 100 miles away lol, and told them I have a 2 stroke, they told me that I'm mistaken that a 2 stroke would be like a weedeater and detroit don't make weedeaters lol.  When I was getting some quotes for the stuff I need done, I got a quote of 4500 to replace a wheel seal, another one for 2500 to replace an exhaust gasket, I was quoted 900 for an oil change and 600 to adjust my air brakes, the 900 to change the oil didn't include filter and if I wanted the bus greased it would be 350 more.  Most of the truckers and loggers do their own work and I always wondered why lol.

Cody, I run a small fleet and operate a shop doing outside work and I can tell you that the numbers you were quoted are off the charts. Sounds like they did not want to do the work. I can not imagine any shop quoting those kind of numbers...absolutely out of this world.

All the high price quotes for work to be done makes me think about charging for my work. LOL

Steve I do hope for your sake the seal holds for a long time and it is just because I never had any luck replacing the oil pump seal (front seal) only on 8v92

Cody we do work on weedeaters! And the wheelseal won't be over $3995! And the exhaust gasket won't be over $2495, and oil change is only $875 including filters and lube! (both for the bus & owner! LOL) See ain't ya glad ya decided to bring it down here, I'm gonna save yas at least $35 ;D

The problem up here is there are very few buses and the shops don't want to work on them, they would rather work on a semi than to crawl into a wheel well, they would rather flip the hood than wiggle into an engine compartment and with so few buses to deal with they just quote a horrendous number and then get back to working on the semi's, as far as iggles, I only know of one other eagle in the UP, and very few MCI's outside of the small charter companies.  The charter companies do their own work and don't take on outside jobs.  If I live long enough maybe one of them will need a quote on a set of cabinets lol.
