Title: HT740 to HT746 Conversion
Post by: Lin on August 07, 2009, 01:59:16 PM
A transmission shop we are working with says they can modify the 740 transmission I have to be 6 inches shorter by using some 6 parts from a 746 transmission.  That will mean it will fit in my MC5a.  The 746 was apparently commonly used on water trucks and fire trucks and had a shorter extension housing.  Does anyone have 746 parts for sale or trade?

Lin, I will ask on the Eagles board for you unless somebody here has Tony Fishers phone number in Kansas he uses that transmission in Eagles to make one a straight T drive with no dropbox by flipping the axle  and probably has a source for them and parts

good luck

Thanks Clifford,

Aside from the possibility of buying the parts retail, he has located some used ones that apparently are made of gold (deduced from the asking price).  I am humble enough to be satisfied with steel or aluminum.

Clifford,

Tony at Southwest Coach said he has done the swap before, but the transmissions were brought to him ready to install.  He did not know where to get the parts.  Although the idea seems great, the cost of parts may make it impractical.

Lin, Not sure it would work anyway. My 740 is tight at the bulk head. Being shorter does not seem like an advantage. Not being straight in the hole makes for a tight fit,  Tom Y

I've still got a 644 in my yard. I think that's your best option. Kent

Kent,

Didn't that 644 come with a whole bus attached?

It's still in there but it wouldn't take much to pull them out. Kent
