For those who have built bed frames, how tall did you build it from floor to bottom of mattress and then what height mattress? I'm trying to figure out a rough idea of how high to build my frame keeping in mind that more height equals more under bed storage but also harder to climb into.
My bed at home I nearly need a ladder to get into.
I built mine 14" high for the mattress support frame and then 1 3/4 " thick bedframe welded on top of that with a 8" mattress. I have two gas cylinders that will hold it up for storage. Jerry
Hi Dave,
My queen platform hight is 22". My Serta pillow top mattress [no box spring] is almost 12" thick. The hight works well for us, yours may differ...
My base is also 6" smaller on 3 sides then the platform for toe space while walking around the bed. Lot's of storage...
All constructed out of cabnet grade 1" plywood then marine carpeted.
Good Luck
Nick-
Our platform is 12", with our Sleep By Number Queen takes it to 24". Just the right height for us. It has a 2" toe kick overhang with gas struts for ease of lifting. Frame is wood with 1/2" plywood with carpet overlay, platform is 1" T&G plywood.

Because of an old back injury, Paula sometimes has trouble getting out of bed, so that was our main concern when building our platform. To determine the correct height, I measured to the bottom of Paula's butt when she was standing, subtracted 10" for the thickness of our mattess, and that was the height of our platform. Jack

Jack you know how to make work fun. ;)
I have twin beds. That are quite tall at the foot when of the bed then have a step about half way and another step a a couple of feet further on.
This step arrangement allows for maximum height and a drawer at the foot of the beds and maximum engine space underneath.

I have a Sleep Number Queen size, on the tilt base. I have about 14" below the base.
