Title: How many Yoopers does it take to screw up a rally lol
Post by: cody on August 02, 2009, 05:05:27 AM
Once again libby has posed the idea that maybe next year a rally could happen up here in our neck of the woods, the only place that I know of that would work out is the Ojibwa Campground   http://www.kbic-nsn.gov/html/campgrounds.htm (http://www.kbic-nsn.gov/html/campgrounds.htm)    The guy that runs the campground said that august would be the best time for him cause thats the time we have the most thirsty mosquitos, I'm thinking that it would be a chance to kick tires, lie about fuel mileage and just generally relax and visit with nothing much formal planned.  The campground guy said he could probably cut the rate from 20 a night to 15 but cause of the place being tribally run he really doesn't have much say in stuff but he's a nice guy anyway, the sites there are huge and have both 30 and 50 amp power, water and a dump station are available on site and the campground itself is on a penninsula that juts out into Keewenaw Bay about a mile from Baraga, one thing thats kinda cool about the place are burial mounds that date back over a thousand years, just thinking out loud here, any ideas?

If we can get back to the UP next summer, count us in!!.  We are leaving the UP (Sault Ste. Marie) today, heading back to Mackinaw City.  I can tell eveyone that the UP is a beautiful place with great people, sights, weather and things to do.  Jack

The east end of the UP is nice but it really doesn't compare to the west end for scenic attractions lol, we've got the Copper Country with copper mines dating back to the 1840's that you can wander around in and the west end isn't as crowded as the east end is lol, we've got a lot of interesting stuff all within a hour or so of our place here, we've even got Da Yoopers lol and their famous tourist trap lol, insanity at it's best lol.  We've got a good spot for a bus or 2 with hookups at the Anti-KOA pretty well set up for long term stays with more spots hopefully soon, I'm just so glad that we got to spend some time visiting with you guys in sanford and got to meet some more busnuts, now that you've seen the UP without snow, you can verify that it's not year round winter lol.  One thing that I find interesting is that the "poor rock" piles that got dug out of the mines and discarded as waste have a higher copper content than what is currently being mined out west. We also have gold panning for anyone that enjoys that up here and NO poisonous snakes, they claim that at one time we had the massaga rattler but durring a cold snap one year they all had their teeth chattering so much they bit themselves to death, so their all gone now.

Jack, at Mackinaw City you gotta see the fort, it's kinda cool with an ongoing dig going on, and take a run out to the island, lots of good stuff to see out there too.

We toured the Fort on our way to the UP. We are planning to do Mackinac Island on Monday, but the weather forcast is not looking good for that.  Jack

One thing I found out about the fort, they have all those reenactors and stuff going on, they got a cannon down by the front of the fort entrance that points out across the water, they get really upset if you torch it off early.  It just doesn't make sence to me for them to load it and then turn their backs on it and walk away, anyway, they said that I can start coming back again next year.

Cody, that sounds like one of the 213 things that Spc. Skippy isn't allowed to do anymore.

Cody, that looks like something we would LOVE to do next year.  Let us know how the plans are progressing.
I have been up in your country, Dianne has not.  I LOVE the Pasties, is that the right spelling?
Jack

Jack,
We discovered pasties (pronounced pass-tees) last week. We plan to get as many in our freezer as we can before heading "down state".  Jack

Jack,
Paula bought a postcard with the recipe on it.  We are getting ready to hitch up, dump and head to Mackinaw City.  I will try to remember to post the recipe. Jack
PS: We prefer the chicken variety.

Jack, on the St Ignois side of the bridge there is a truck stop, I think it's called "truck stop" lol, you can buy pasties by the dozen there lol, it's right on US2 on the lake side.  You would be coming towards the bridge on I-75, then get off on US2 west, go over I-75 and it is right there on the left, to get back onto 75 just head out of the truck stop going  east and take the first exit south, it hits directly at the tollbooth
