Title: Transmission
Post by: BJ on July 29, 2009, 09:51:59 PM
Well the rear end locked up, dropped the driveshaft and cracked the trans housing on the 98 DL3..You cannot believe how much a new trans housing costs...As much as a new car and I don't mean a puddle jumper.....So If anyone knows where there is a rebuildable DL3 trans I would appreciate any information sent to my email MC8Driver@AOL.com...did I do this correctly for the board?

I've no real experience in this area, however if I had to start looking for a DL Tranny, I'd probably start here:

http://www.caylorsupply.com/

I was told they have a lot of MCI parts.  I have no experience dealing with these folks nor financial interest.

Sorry to hear about your coach's owie.  =/

You might check with Nimco, they sell working used takeouts.

You should have a B500 in your bus.

If you do a search I posted a S50 and B500 for sale on ebay awhile back.

Dan still has a few units left.

I'll find out and post the info in the morning.

BJ,

That is great to hear from somebody else that owns a DL3. I was beginning to think that we were the only one ;D.

That is terrible about the tranny (I can say that, because I know how much that stuff costs). I would try calling Sam Caylor, but I know that he will tell you that it is very $$$$. He isn't overpriced, but he will tell you as it is. Otherwise, our local DD Allison dealer has given us incredible prices in the past.

I know that it is tough to pay at least 5K for a minor repair :-X.

God bless,

John

David Gregory at Southern Oregon Diesel had one awhile back from a Prevost also try http://www.utxchange.com they may cut you a deal on a rebuilt one.
BJ if cost run to high look into installing one of the Eaton auto shift 10 speeds I see those for sale in the 3000 dollar range plus they produce better fuel mileage than a Allison.
Check for 4060 series from a motorhomes it is basically the same as the B500
FWIW a friend bought a B500 off the shelf at Allison and the price was more like the cost of a bus 27,000 dollars new out the door                               good luck

Burt from ABC Coach in Faribault Minnesota has a number of B500's sitting on a shelf they are either new or rebuilt.

The Dan that the gentleman referred to in an earlier post is from Rochester bus lines in Rochester Minnesota he has some low mile rebuilds for around 3k

You should be able to google both of these guys easy enough

Good luck,

Rick

I would also assume that he is talking about Dan with Rochester coach. He is a nice guy. If he can help, I think that he will. We are friends, and I enjoy every time we get to see him.

I would assume that he wasn't talking about Dan Newby, Crossroads. Last time we chatted, I don't remember him saying anything about having B500's, but I could be wrong.

God bless,

John

Is there no possibility that your case can be repaired?

If the rear end locked up and caused all this damage I'd be real leary of using the transmission in another case as it maybe heavily damaged too!
Last time I was in Orlando at the Detroit dealer they had re-manned B500 trany's on the store room floor and quoted me $7500 w/warranty!
I know YMMV, but if it were me I'd be calling Orlando Detroit Diesel Allison!
FWIW ;D  BK  ;D

Sorry to hear about the major damages!

Busboys

Dan Holter

1825 N. Broadway

Rochester, MN  55906

507-269-4251

I can vouch for Dan shipping two engines and B500's to the west coast.    I have had two transactions with Dan and everything has been spot on!!      He might have a B500 on ebay right now.  Give him a call.
