Title: sidewall defect

I am planing on two new steer tires this morning because of a sidewall defect, a 1/8" buldge that runs from the rim to the tread. I have kept an eye on it but now it has small weather checking at the apex. This is a fairly new Continental that the PO installed. I have no paper work so I doubt they will help with the cost.

The numbers on the tire says 12R 22.5 152/148. Are these the only numbers I need. It is a six ply tread and 1 ply sidewall (steel) ??

Rick, that is norm for a 12r 22.5 1 ply steel sidewalls

Please explain / norm as in the defect is servicable or these problem is common. My research on the subject says if it is a depression it is OK but buldges are not.

sidewall bulge of up to 3/8" is generally accepted, however if you have checking also, I would be inclined to change it.

Thats where they tied the cords togather. If its weather checking it may be getting to old for a steer tire anyway. If its unstable in any way it should come right off, if it has not changed over time in any way, it should not in itself be the deciding factor for replacement.

Check the DOT numbers to see when they made it.

Jack it up and rotate it against a straight edge to be sure its still perfectly round, no distortion at all is acceptable.

Rick,

I'm sure it is at least 14 ply rated regardless of the actual number of plies.

There should be no steel in the sidewalls, it is only under the tread.

Sounds like a Toyo...back when they had steel tread belts/plys and nylon/fabric sidewalls!

Our tire (the drives are brand new Michelins) are "wrapped" in steel, not just under the tread.

Mine say they have one ply of steel on the sidewalls. We are going on a 500 mile round trip tomorrow leaving at 3:00 AM. I have been watching this tire and will keep an eye on it. I keep my tires covered but the heat here is brutal. Wish me luck.
