Title: 8V92 life span
Post by: JohnEd on July 17, 2009, 11:19:31 PM
I was recently told that the 92 series would only give you 150K miles in a bus.  Lugging was the problem.  In trucks he said they would give 400 to 450 K miles.  What say you guys?  I have seen a lot of Pres with rebuilt engines in them and the coach had only about 150K on it.  That always puzzled me.

Se as I will be looking for one of those in a year or so this is a serious subject to me.

Thanks all,

John

I don't have any records with this bus so couldn't say when or if it was overhauled or replaced. The mileage is over 600 thousnd and it soen't use very much oil and doen't smoke at all. It had a few worn rockers when the Jakes were installed so don't think the overhaul was recent. Jerry

I recall the leasing company would do an inframe at 400k and pull it at 800k and completely go through it. Mine had an inframe at 422k and at 862 It is beginning to get a little weak again. I had to do the turbo at 674K due to low boost pressure.

I am sure some need work sooner and some go longer, but I remember when we had a fleet of them that was the plan.

I think it is all about not lugging it and keeping it cool. If it stays happy so will you.  :)

The info I got was about buses in private hands and was a caution about Pres with 140K miles.  You can bank this guys opinion so validity isn't a factor.  I believe what your experiences are as well.  My question is "How do you lug an engine that is hooked to an Allison 4 speed?".  If I were looking to purchaser a Pre, and I will be, should I pay especially close attention to where the Alison up shifts and down shifts?  Those trans are adjustable in that regard, right?

Thank you all for making clear that tat engine certainly can live a good long while in a bus if properly maintained and operated.

Again,Thank you all,

John

Maintenance is certainly a key.  Even well meaning private parties may be doing a poor job.  I spoke to someone recently that has an '84 Wanderlodge with a 6V92.  They were very confident that they put in excellent maintenance.  The guy even carried some heavy tools because he said he sometimes did not trust others to do a job well.  Meanwhile, he has been running Delo 400 oil in it for the past 20,000 miles.  At least it was straight 40.  His wife was proud that she treated the tires regularly with some stuff that, although it made them shiny, was probably contributing to their deterioration.

Anyway, I do not think that low use engines ever get as much mileage as high use ones.
