We'll be traveling to Las Vegas sometime next week and wondered if anyone has any good tips for camping somewhere not too far from the Strip, not outrageously expensive, safe, and friendly to buses.

Circus Circus used to have a RV park at the rear of the Casino. It was all on asphalt bus very nice.

Circus Circus is good because you can walk to most of the places and not have to move the bus or tow car.
If you get by the Grand Canyon while you are there Jerry and Rose Mary are spending the summer there driveing a bus.

I too, have stayed at Circus Circus. It is close to everything (we had no toad), and was easy to get to. I remember it as being pretty much a large parking lot with hook-ups and a bathhouse. But it served our needs perfectly.
Kirby,Sams Town is not on the strip but they do have a shuttle also try AZ Charlies the bad thing about Circus Cricus is they double your rates on the weekend now and charge 5 bucks extra if you want a tree or grass it is just another KOA now. FWIW Circus Circus is the only RV park on the strip.
PS Kirby the diner at Sam's has real ham and eggs no rubber ham there good luck
We go to Las Vegas most every year right before Christmas to see the casinos decorated. We stay at the KOA at Circus Circus-and request an end spot with a bit of grass-a little more expensive, but at least it doesn't feel like just a parking lot. Since Circus Circus relinquished ownership to KOA, it has become alot more expensive to stay there-but as mentioned, you can't beat the location for convenience to Las Vegas BL.
Out towards Sam's Town on Boulder Highway, there are smaller RV parks that are cheaper, but then you should have a towed to get around. You'll burn up the savings in gas-just stay at Circus Circus. Good Luck, TomC
Another vote for Sam's Town - it is always our first choice. They run a free bus from the casino that makes a loop downtown as well as to the strip. We've also stayed at Roadrunner, just west of Sam's Town but its not as nice. I've walked through Circus Circus and you couldn't pay me enough to get me to stay there.
When we go to Vegas, we tend to boondock right on the strip -- there are a handful of RV-friendly parking lots. However, in July I would definitely want park power. We've stayed at the Oasis, just off the southernmost end of the strip, and they have a shuttle. We've also stayed at Sam's Town. We lament the passing of the Silverton's RV park, and the transfer of the Circus-Circus venue to KOA.
Not sure what's behind your visit, but I will suggest that July is not the time to casually stroll the strip, except maybe after 10 or so at night. So, while KOA is an easy walk to many things, that may not be so useful at this time of year. I would suggest Sam's, having decent rates on 50-amp power, and easy access to transit. Here's our write-up on it, from July two years ago:

Sean,
When boondocking on the strip do you need the generator?

Generally, no. But note that we've stayed at parks with electric hookups when we've had to be there in the summer -- July and August in Vegas are brutal, and we need the A/C on 24/7 -- even when we are out and about, the pets needs it.
We like it there in the late fall or winter, and then we don't need any A/C. Without A/C, we can go two or three days on batteries alone.

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions... we're leaning towards Sam's Town at this point.

My votes for Sam's town. Tell them you saw a discount on a sign on the highway, we did and got $10.00 off. Hopefully the offers still on.

"But there's no humidity!"
For you Easterners, that's the unofficial Nevada state motto, to be repeated anytime someone complains about the heat. ;)

I would prefer 100 degree+ dry heat any day over 90 degrees and 70 degree+ dewpoints. At least you can get out of the sun with dry heat.
I took three days off to work on my bus in late June and two of the days were the hottest most humid days of summer so far. I drank glass after glass of plain water and still felt like I was ready to die at the end of the day. It was 97 degrees and dry earlier in the summer and it felt much cooler on those days simply due to lower humidity.
The rocketry club I belong to has been experimenting with having our national event around labor day instead of mid July simply due to the heat. It was held 30 or 40 miles south of Las Vegas two years ago in July and it was plenty warm.
if you want a place for boondocking close to the strip dont' forget the wild wild west truck stop on flamingo west. free free free hahahahaha they have a dump station thats' free too, (with fuel purchase). the casino there is a little cheesy (slightly dirty and small) but they have the best breakfast deal in town.
