My driver side glass was cracking so i decided to go ahead and get insurance to fix it while i won't have to get off work to do it. anyhoo they were putting in with a new gasket too and almost had it in when SMACRAACCKK!!!!. and then silent cussing ;) T new one will be here monday.
thy seem to think the new gasket s too thick. they said it is a universal. and the originals aren't made anymore.
They were also sitting the gasket in the frame and trying to put the glass in the gasket. the gasket seemed a little tight.
Ive only done this with on old VW bug but seems like this would call for the old put the gasket on the class and put rope in the frame groove and pull the rope out as it goes around.
the said that rope trick works on smaller glass but thats how they do the big ones with a curve.
How do you guys do it??? ???
The bus garage installing my new windshield this week broke the first one and had to order another one. They said the gasket is much thicker than most and doesn't have a lock strip like most buses.
Sorry, I can't help on how to do an glasas install as I wouldn't attempt it myself.
Me thinks they were probably not taking the time they should have and were blaming it on the gasket...which is a none issue!

IF and that is a big IF your frame is the same shape as the glass and you have a good or new gasket it should be no problem.
I am in the process of a CUSTOM windshield install.
I have been to multiple glass companies and had them install stock MC8 windshields with standard MCI windshield gaskets and not a problem or hitch ( they just did not match the opening in the bus )

yeah, they said they will be doing dome trimming next time. even where they got it in i don't think they could have put lock bead in.

If they think it is the wrong gasket, have them get one from MCI. I know how much these gaskets can shrink over time (and UV exposure). I would not want anyone "trimmming" on our gaskets or glass. When we installed Cliff's windshields, the lock ring groove was almost closed before we forced the tool into it to install the lock strip. Plenty of soap to lubricate the gasket when installing the glass, working the glass into the gasket VERY SLOWLY, then more lubricant when installing the lock strip. Jack
their choice of lubricant was spray foaming windex. Seemed to go away too quick but worked when they sprayed it.
They have these loop knives to trim inside of the gasket down
they claim MCI does not make the gasket anymore so they had to use the universal ???
I'm no expert here John...however I cannot think there is that much difference between the MCI and universal gaskets.

They insurance pays 100% here on windshields and they use these guys.

what does not make sense to me is they put the gasket in the hole then tried to put the glass in the gasket. they say that's how they do it all the time.
I have only ever did this job on a 69 beetle, smaller job with flat glasss, MCI is large with curved glass.
I put the gasket on the glass and put a rope in the frame groove of the gasket and set the that in the hole and used the rope to get the gasket around lip on the inside.
Did you guys put the gasket on the glass or the frame?
When I replaced the gasket on the windshields on our 01 Eagle I used the rope trick and did it myself. I did not even have to lubricate, as the lock strip went it smooth as silk. I couldn't imagine doing any different. I bought the gaskets from Jefferson Bus, they had them in stock.

When I have to have mine replaced, I have them done by the bus shop because insurance pays for it. They put the gasket on the frame and then put the glass in the gasket. I did it myself a couple times, and it's a real pain in the rear to get the lock strip in without the special tool.
Did you check with MCI? I'm not sure the information about them not making the gasket is accurate, but it's been several years since I last purchased gaskets.

That's how it's done. The gasket locks into the contours of the frame, and it held in place by the glass. With the glass in place, the gasket can't come out unless the frame is deformed.

I'd call MCI and ask about the gaskets! I know for a fact that MCI, C & J, US Coach, and and many others will have them in stock! The outfit you are using just don't want to pony up the $ for them!

the new glass is slightly undersize than the first one, they sanded and deburred the edges,
did not trim the gasket
didnot use the silcone caulk on gasket to body but used spray silicone for lubricant, even on lock bead
used spray foaming windex for lube on glass, I think it goes away too quick.
