Title: Roof repairs and painting
Post by: paul102a3 on June 27, 2009, 06:41:13 AM
My bus needs new paint on the roof along with some roof repairs. The PO had Camping World install a KVH sat on the roof. Camping World installed the dish dead center on the roof and then ran coax to the front and rear TVs over the roof. The cable is clamped down with cable clamps, sheet metal screws every 16 inchs and then covered each clamp and screw with silicone sealant.

The sat system needs to be replaced and I would like to mount the new dish up front and run the cables inside where they belong.

Also, I have 3 powered vents in the roof (well they used to be powered vents) that I would like to remove and have the holes repaired.

In order to complete these tasks, I will need the old screw holes and mounting holes from the sat system repaired, the 4 inch round vent holes need to be patched and then the entire roof needs painting down to the drip molding.

While I can do the work myself, I just don't have the time right now so I am looking for suggestions of a place that can do this kind of work within a couple of hour drive from the Tampa Bay area.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Were it mine and I couldn't do it......Get rid of any silicone glue you might have up there.  Plug the holes with 3M auto Seam Sealant....lasts forever and will take paint.  Any body shop has plastic film and masking tape machines.  The film comes in roles and is folded so you can get widths from 12 inches up to 8 feet.  The hard part is going to be cleaning the roof but of you are going to paint you don't much care if it gets scratched a little.  Clean it with something harsh and scrub brushes.  If your roof is still factory painted....do not go down to bare metal.  Fact paint is really special stuff and makes a great bond to the metal.  Clean it, mask it, paint it with brilliant white Emeron or other single stage poly paint.  You can do it outside in the early morning with min dust and bug activity.  Yes you will have some bugs and a little dust on it but it is the roof.

Two 17 year olds for a long day should be all the labor you need.  $160 labor, $30 for taping machine, $30 for plastic film masking, $30 masking tape, $250 for paint and mat and finally $20 for the garden hose that you will use to wet down the dirt or concrete around the bus the morning that you paint.  Had I not done it I would not have the brass to suggest it.

Worked for me,

John

If there is some sort of textured or rough white coating on the roof all bets are off.
