Title: MCI Rivit question
Post by: travelingfools on June 24, 2009, 08:40:38 AM
Heading out today to purchase my rivits for my new skin. Can someone tell me what size/type I need to ask for to match the existing skin rivits ?  Its a 1987 MC 9.

Thanks in advance !

Are you going back with the semi tubular rivets or pop rivets?  We do carry some of both style in stock.  Call me at 1-800-468-5287 x232.

Your MCI-9's outer skins are structural and must use structural type rivet (that leave mandrel within to reinforce rivet's shell & sealed moisture out).

About how long it needs to be...is the thickness of the total metal plus the diameter...long (at least). If you use longer ones than you need (1/8" or more), you will have pin sticking out.

I am in the same boat having my skins for the baggage door. My maintenance manual says to use 2S rivets whatever the heck those are. I got off the phone with MCI tech support and they were not much help either. Now the scuttle butt is they are supposed to semi tubular stainless steel rivets. Being semi tubular would mean the shop or upset end of the rivet is hollow and would require a special die to buck it much like a brake shoe rivet. Am I correct? Has anyone ever smashed these type of rivets and what tooling is required? I would imagine they were originally squeezed and not shot at the factory.
