Title: What type of nut to use for exhaust clamp?
Post by: belfert on June 20, 2009, 07:44:25 PM
I discovered today that the nut on the exhaust clamp on the turbo had fallen off.  What type of nut should I replace it with?

I suspect a nylon lock nut would melt.  Should I use an all metal lock nut?  It is fine thread so that may complicate things.

Brian,

The best at this piont would probably be to get a couple of fine thread stainless nuts and double nut it. I have fought some of the locking nuts on and off. You will be OK with the double nut deal and you can get them on and off real easy.

Exhaust nuts should be brass

Ray,

Brass is good for exhaust manifold studs but for clamps the metal lock nut is much better.

Brass cannot be tightened very much and clamps need a lot of torque compared to studs.

Another alternate is a drilled end clamp bolt and castle nut/cotter pin.
