Title: New Windshield Install
Post by: FloridaCliff on June 16, 2009, 07:33:10 PM
I thought this day would never come....at least last Thursday that is....

Here's what happened:

I found out Jack was going to be visiting NCBob for a few days, gave him a call and wanted to see if he could help me replace my windshields.  I had replaced car windshields, but nothing with this beadlock stuff.  I am someone who considers time apprenticing with a more experienced person, time well spent.  Jack agreed to help me....OK now to get the windshields here....

I ordered the windshields two weeks in advance, I had previously confirmed a week was sufficient notice.

Ordered on Tuesday and scheduled for delivery Thursday of the next week, Since i am still of the "working class" I told them I needed 24 hours notice of delivery and a four hour window of delivery...In other words i need to take a half day off to be available to unload it with the tractor.

Wednesday came and received my call, it would be there between 12-2 on Thursday, arranged for the time off.

Thursday, made sure I was home by 12:00, no delivery, no call, Friday no delivery by 3:00, called the distributor, salesman was out, would have to wait until Monday, blood pressure is rising....

Now remember, Jack is arriving Monday and leaving on Wednesday.

Monday at 09:00, called the distribute, they checked on shipment, would be delivered between 10-12 today......took the rest of the day off as no one was home to unload....waited....waited....saw Jack pull in at NCBobs..waited..... 2:00 truck shows up...unloaded....
If I wasn't so happy to see that box I might have just refused it..

Tuesday Jack and I install the windshields.

In only 1 1/2 hours from removal to finish.

Paul,

I can't imagine doing it by myself, just not enough arms.

It was actually easier than I thought, but Jack showed me the tricks that he uses.

1. Patience, 2. Don't get in a hurry 3. custom made oak sticks. 4. More patience   ;D

And that beadlock tool I have is worth every penny.

I bought my bead lock tool on eBay and it worked great! A glass shop gave me a couple of UHMW sticks to work the rubber, I didn't even use any soap. I didn't even chip or break anything! :) I used some rope and tied it to the steering wheel, through the entrance door and tied down to a scaffold. Did you use the rope trick on the inside?

I'll be the new glass is nice!

Here in SC, windshield replacement is 100% with insurance.  So mine is waiting for me to arranange with the shop to bring it by. ;D

Newbee,

Same in Florida, mine were just worn out, not broken or chipped and starting to delaminate, scratched from probably 34 years of use.

If only a stone or rock could have took one out  ;)....nahhhhhh!

I would rather avoid the dramatic and just replaced them on my dime... :o

The view is worth every penny dollar..

Hi, would you enlighten us about the rope trick?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks  Dick Egler

Dick,

Let me answer on what we did,  When ever I replaced a car or truck window without bead lock and and it had rubber moulding, we would put the rubber on the glass and then wrap a small rope around the inside of the gasket.

The window would get pushed in place and then someone on the inside would slowly pull the string away from the window, while the other person pushed against the rubber on the outside.  This would pull the lip of the rubber over the windshield flange.  Just to be safe we usually put two wraps around the window.

On my 4905, we put the rubber channel on first and slide the glass into the bottom grove and then used wooden sticks to slowly slide it into the grove.  We had to go back and catch the lip of the rubber to get it over.  The square corners are a bugger.

Cilff, where did you buy your windshield. I have a Eagle and bought 2 from Curved Glass and one broke with a small rock that on the old one it would have just been a chip and are so distorted they are hard to see out of so I am looking for 2 new ones from a different outfit
good luck

Clifford,

I also bought from Curved Glass, I hope my luck is better than yours.. :o

It was $250 a side delivered.  The shipping seemed expensive, $100 per window, but I have no other glass reference to compare.....Yet

If you find a better deal, please add the info to this thread.

How many man hours does a windshield install normally take?  I was charged for at least 10 hours labor for my windshields, but they are HUGE compared to most of the older buses.  There is also an additional complication that both windshields have to come out to replace one.

Well, I wasn't charged, but my insurance company was.

It took Jack and I 1.5 hours from start of removal to finish.

Jack might credit a small part of that to having a good Grunt/Apprentice, who listened and did what he was told.   ::)

My windshields are probably half the size of yours though.

The bus garage service manager told me when I had my windshields replaced the first time that he never wanted to do the job again.  He said it was really hard to do due to the large size.  He said the next time that I would have to pay for new windshield if they broke one during installation.

He did agree to replace the windshield again after I hit the goose.  I take the bus in on the 29th.

Dick, On our Eagle I used the rope trick to pull the rubber over the aluminum moulding, worked great. I think I used 5/16" braided nylon. I didn't have any help on pushing from the outside but it came out OK.

I saved some pics somewhere, I'll look for them if you want me too. Different computer and on another portable hard drive.
