Title: July 4th gatering at Palmetto Cove
Post by: kyle4501 on June 06, 2009, 07:02:06 PM
July 4th is just around the corner.

Several of us will be at Palmetto Cove for July 4th weekend. I'll be there for as much of the week before as work will allow.  8)

Come one, come all. No reservations needed, they don't take 'em anyway since they have never been filled.

There won't be anything planned. Covered dish meals will be encouraged. Those with musical talents will be allowed to serenade us. And, B.S. will be in abundant supply. (bus stories, of course  ;) )

Bring your motor bikes as there are fun roads to exercise them on up there.

All the parking is good, but I prefer close to the road.

Hope to see lots of y'all there!

Anyone care to share other good ideas as to what else to do while there?

I really wish we were able to make it.  Palmetto Cove is a really neat place and the fun is wonderful.  Too bad we are a bit too far away and don't get enough time off to make the trip.  Have fun everyone!

Hey John, you still got those video's on you tube from the rally we were at? Just curious as to where they could be seen if you still have them!
Also, if we don't have a july 4th event to do, there might be a possibilty that we may be going somewhere north and the Cove was mentioned as a stopping place! All depends on the event (one has been cancelled) and my work where there has been none lately which means no money and our travelling leader! He decides where we stop! LOL

Excuses.... :(
We'll be at the October non-rally, but July 4th has us at the Red, White, and Bluegrass Festival in Morganton, NC.
Morganton in July will be an interesting week without a power pole!   Oh well, the generator needs some exercise.
Hope it isn't a 90* plus week!   It was last year.... :P
Y'all have a big July 4th!   See you in October!

Update

We can probably use Palmetto Hall as required through out the weekend.
I have reserved the shelter Saturday & we will have access to the grills all day.

I'm gonna bring a BBQ pork shoulder & some ice cream churns. My 12 year old will need some assistance in cranking the churn.  ;)
Mom is going to make blueberry ice cream & possibly some peach.
Does anyone want to bring their favorite?

Looks like a dozen units so far. . . . .
Dexter, I hope you & yours can be there!  ;D  8)
Gary, looking forward to seeing you & Linda again.
Steve, I haven't heard from you lately . . . . .  ;D

Kyle, you can count Deb and I in.  That is, as long as we don't get one of those anonymous non- existent sent/ didn't send emails ....asking us not to attend.....lol........ :D ;D ;D ;D

I am still planning on bringing the ribs and I need to get a new ice cream freezer too.  While I enjoy the ole hand cranking I think I will stick to reeling out the electric cord for the churner...... but I will give the kids a break every now and then.... ;D

Deb took the whole week off before the 4Th and we were planning to be there the whole week but her niece is having surgery on Wed. and in lite of the phone service down at the cove Deb wants to wait to get the results from the Doc.  So we will be leaving Lexington some time Wed afternoon the week prior to the 4Th.

Kyle, what is the weather there on the 4th a couple of us Eagle owners not going to the Ennis Mountain Rally are thinking about heading east,if you guys don't mind the sound of Eagles rusting at night.
You get flowing water and Eagle rust it a soothing sound  lol

good luck

The weather will be PERFECT! (as it always is in God's country  ;) )

Bring those Eagles on over. According to past history, Eagles don't rust while at The Cove. Not a single spec of rust has ever been found there!

Anyone bringing kids? Mine are 12 & 14. I can bring the water bottle rocket launcher if there is any interest. (bring 2 liter soda bottles to build the rockets).

I've also got a marshmellow 'gun' they can play with. . .

We'll have access to either the shelter or the hall, so I was thinking we'd figure it out once we see how many are there.

I like the fellowship at the shared meals, so I was hoping to do all lunches & dinners as we have done in the past-
People bring what they can, I'll have extra (hamburgers, hotdogs, BBQ, spaghetti, etc), & a donation pot will be there for those that want to contribute that way.

No real planned agenda except to have fun fellowship & eat.

What we do is encourage shared meals - potluck -

My focus is to welcome everyone & to let attendees help however they can. That way, no one has to do too much & everyone gets to have fun!

At the first rally I attended, I didn't plan ahead & was short on food. They put out a donation pot so those who wanted to contribute that way could. That made me feel welcome at the meals in spite of not bringing any food. So I decided I would do the same.

I try to bring extra main dishes so no one starves.

A tentative menu, subject to change at the last minute  ;D

Friday

Lunch - Frozen Pizza? hamburgers?

Dinner - Spaghetti?

Saturday breakfast will be omelets in a bag.

Lunch - hamburgers

Dinner - BBQ

Sunday

Breakfast - to each their own

Lunch - left overs

If you play an instrument, there will be opportunities to play with others.

The Gathering was a blast! We had a dozen units show up (& about twice that much food).

To those that missed it, you sure did!

As good as the food was, the company was better!!  8)

The 3pm ice cream social ended up being a 4:30 milk shake mixer.  :o
(It must have been some warm ice . . . .  ::) )

For those interested, the recipe for Palmetto BusNuts Ice Cream:

1 pkg (4.3oz) instant vanilla pudding
1 can of sweetened condensed milk (cold)
Same amount of milk (cold)
½ tsp vanilla extract
½ cup of whipping cream (cold)

2 cups fresh blueberries (or other favorite fruit)
¾ cup sugar

Puree blueberries & sugar in blender & chill in fridge.
Combine pudding mix, condensed milk, milk, vanilla extract & whipping cream in a bowl until pudding powder is dissolved.

Mix in fruit & freeze by:

Placing in freezer & stirring every few minutes as needed.
-OR-
Place in ice cream churn, add ice & salt to the bucket, and then crank until frozen.

Makes about 2 quarts.

(Double or triple as required for churn size)

Just to second Jack and Kyle's opinions about the gathering this weekend at Palmetto Cove.  If you were not there you missed a good time and the company of some wonderful people.  We really enjoyed it.

We had some clutch problems on the MCI5a, but we made it home safely.  Clutch worked fine, just a little noisy. I see a clutch replacement in the near future.  Any suggestions, the place to purchase clutch kit, a rough estimate of price, tips, what you did, etc.

Once again thanks everyone for a special weekend.  Thanks Gary, enjoyed playing music.

                                          'til the next time,

This was our first visit with this group; I wish we had gone sooner.  The ride out there was beautiful, once we got there the view was even better.  We brought food to cook for the weekend.  Much to the wife's suprise she didn't have to cook once.  The meals were great and the desserts were sinful.  Ed & Ann made the best breakfast, Deb says she will never cook an omelet in a pan ever again.  While Deb was grateful for the sharing of receipts I was grateful for the sharing of bus knowledge.  I can't remember when we have had such a good time with a wonderful bunch of people. We will definitely be at the rally in October, however we will be making a few trips out there before that.

Thanks again to everyone for great food, music, laughs, sharing and above all the great company.

PS - A note for Gary & Steve my wife will only polish bumpers & wheels on a GM bus, since you both own a s.o.b. you will have to use your own elbow grease.

We had a great time as well as those attending.  This is the first time I have not taken photos of our rally this weekend in all the years we have been busnuts.  I just wanted to socialize as much as I could this time which I never get to do and visit with our friends (Old & New) the entire weekend. I believe Kyle took some photos of the actual buses there and will post them, if he wants to send them to me I will do this also and all he has to do is ask.

We ate so good, had so much fun and man we had the greatest NASCAR race we have seen in a long time with such exciting ending as it was, not to offend any Kyle Fans.

Glen & Patsy (finally) arrived, late Friday night, I could hardly wait for Glen to set up so we could go Jam at the campground shed.  Kyle informed me I had to wait to do that on Saturday since they were traveling all that time to get there.  Man what a great picker he is and friends they are.  I was glad to see in this board he made it home safely, you sure hate these big problems on these big rigs to happen away from home if they have to happen.  Good luck Glen with your repairs and thanks so much again for a great time playing.

Debbie & Steve, it was so great to visit with you guys after coming all the way from Kentucky and the weekend went just too fast.  Lets do this again real soon.

Sarah, Fred, Kyle, Nancy, Anna, Seth, you guys are always such great hosts no matter what size the rally is and this was my most relaxing just to do nothing if I wanted or what ever.  Thanks for having this gathering for us all to be able to attend on July 4th.

Jack & Dianne, such a great couple to visit with and seems like they are in love more than the last time we seen them.

Lila & Leroy, top shelf couple of busnuts that you hope to have the respect for from others to you as we do them.  I have never had a priest or preacher do a better  Sunday sermon than Lila did for us.

Ed & Ann, It is hard not to sound like I'm sucking up but when you spend time with this couple and enjoy their conversation and great, great food and cooking you will think you have to tell everyone to be sure to have them attend your rallies no matter what size.  Oh, allow Ed to make those great (Eggs or Breakfast in a Bag) for the best breakfast of your life.  Before I forget also, congratulations again on your 39th Wedding Anniversary you also spent with us.

Bob & Debbie, we all loved meeting you guys for the fist time, your bus is so beautiful and comfortable.  To see a couple so much into bussing as you two are is sure an inspiration to us all.  Don't forget what I said Debbie.

The host of Palmetto Campground for the weekend, Fred, Sarah, Mike and Joann were just the kind of people you want to greet you and make your stay as comforting as they can.  It was like family all together when we ate together, prayed together and listened to music together.  Mike, your sure missed a great, great ending at the Daytona race.  Oh, I already said that eh?

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend where they were and that you will one day be able to attend camping with us or by your self at Palmetto Cove Campground, Cleveland, SC in your travels.  Tell them Gary Lee sent you, we'll leave the night light on for you.

Gary
