Title: DDEC II to DDEV IV Harness
Post by: Hard Headed Ken on June 02, 2009, 10:38:43 AM
Hello everyone, I'm new to this BB, but have I owned converted coaches for over 20 years. I know a few of you personally and a few more through other friends. Thanks for letting me on board.

I have a 1988 Prevost and I'm going to install a Series 60. I'm going from DDEC II to DDEC IV. Will the DDEC II engine harness work with modifications or will I need to build a new harness?

Thanks,
Ken

DDEC-IV requires a whole different engine harness.  There are more sensors, and more pins are populated at the ECM end.

The engine you bought has the engine harness.  YOu only need to be looking at the DC harness and the coach harness.
Jack
I guess you bought the one that I told you about?

I sent you a Series 60 DDEC-II to Series 60 DDEC-IV .pdf file that explains a DETROIT DIESEL kit to install and adapt the DDEC ii-to a iv.

But it sure would be easier and less $ to use the harness that came with the engine !!

Bill Gerrie over on the BNO board ( busnut.com) has done a lot of DDEC upgrade work to his GM 5302, all the way to DDEC IV, as well as help others mixing and matching DDEC systems.

happy coaching!

Ken, I can't be sure which cable you are asking about.  If it is the engine harness, you should use the OEM DDEC IV harness if you can get your hands on it.

If you are talking about the harness to front of the bus, you might be able to get by with your existing harness.  It is not affected by the number of sensors.  Basically it is a pair of twisted wires for the data, and controls such as cruise control throttle, and Jakes. Of course, it is a bit more complicated than that, but I would guess that the functions would be the same from II to IV.

I have the front harness wiring information on my project pages (see signature).

If your bus was not DDEC, ignore my reply.  You will have to build a cable.

Just to be sure, this information is a guess and you need to make sure to verify.

An additional thought.  If you can use your original front harness, I believe you will want to update the data port.  DDEC II uses something like an oblong multi-pin connector.  You should convert that to a standard 6 or 9 pin connector.  That will then allow you to use fun toys like SilverLeaf.  It will also make it more convenient for mechanics to hook up to your data port.

I just wanted to say thanks for the help. Now I have enough information that I feel confident about completing this engine swap.

Thanks,
Ken
