Title: MCI 9 Drive axle nut and washer.
Post by: johns4104s on May 24, 2009, 11:26:29 AM
Dallas and I looked into the drive axle seal leak, we got as far as the big nut. It did not have a lock washer on it (the big washer you bend over to stop the nut coming of) we dont have one, but we also could not knock the nut loose. Do you have any info mation on the tool to turn it  and do you have an idea what size the washer is?

Thanks

John

Here is a photo of the sockets I use for the wheel bearing nuts.  The smaller one is for a 2 1/2" nut and the larger one is for a 4" nut.  Both use a 1/2" ratchet.  Jack

Thanks Jack...

To give a bit more information, I started to remove the nut using the old tried and true method of a dull screwdriver or chisel against the edge, but the metal is way too soft. I went to using a heavy brass punch but the nut was still deforming with that. Almost as if the nut has been heated and cooled and there is no longer any strength to it. Scary to think that's what is holding the bearing nut on.
If this weren't a holiday weekend, I'd just have Napa get the proper wrench and a replacement nut and washer, but around here they aren't real good about doing stuff on weekends, let alone Holidays.

BTW, does anyone have the part numbers for the nut and lock?

John,

Check you email. I sent a message regarding this.

There isn't a bendable washer on the drive axle. It uses a splined washer which locks the inner nut, and the outer nut is tightened against it to hold it.

The 4" socket is for the drive. 2 1/2 for the front and tag. I have an extra 4" socket I bought from another busnut who didn't need it any longer. Would sell it, or loan it if you want.

Craig, Thanks.

Does anyone know if the drive axle bearing nut can be purchased from a local truck supply, or is it only bus supply?

Thanks

John

That one I can't answer, but I strongly suspect it is a common truck part.

Do you have both nuts on the tube?  And the splined washer?

Craig,

Yes we have everything, but we dint want to mess up the nut without a replacement.

Based on Jack's pictures, they look like HD truck stuff. Napa or your favorite truck parts store. Be sure you know whether they are 6 or 8 point.
