Title: Jake Brake
Post by: boxcarOkie on May 21, 2009, 06:09:08 PM
Hello, I am new to this, so if this is the wrong place let me know.

I recently purchased a 1983 Eagle S-10, 550 Detroit with a 6spd Allison.  On the trip back from Florida I noted that the Jake Brake switch was not activating the brake when turned on.  I called the previous owner after I got home and he told me that "it was possibly not working because of the new 6spd transmission that was recently installed" and this just doesn't seem right to me.

Anyone out there ever hear of this?

Thanks,

BCO

All of the 6 speed Allison World transmissions I have seen the Jake is wired into the tranny by way of a module. Take it to a dealer and make sure it is turn on from the engine    Good luck

Thanks for the tip, I am trying to find a diesel shop in my area that might be considered reasonable, Detroit Diesel is really high.  I also checked out the Eagles board and attempted to sign up for that.

Thanks for the input guys.

Welcome to the madness BCO. I can't help you with your question, but I'm sure as soon as the smarter guys log on you'll get all the answers you need. I do have a question of my own, however, what is a Detroit 550? Thanks, Will

I was told it was a "550" horse Detroit Diesel 8V that is all I know.  That, and if you hammer it down, it runs like a striped ........ well, it really gets after it.

We need a little more info on your bus Okie something is wrong with this setup if you have a v8 Detroit and a 6 speed transmission.Does your engine have a turbo on it.
I ask only because I never saw a S- 10 Eagle with a V8 only 6V92TA also is yours a 35 or 40 ft    good luck

Maybe the transmission is a 5 speed and they are counting lock-up as an additional shift.  Do you have a push button or lever to shift gears?  Jack

Jack- Allison has both push button and lever shift for the World Transmission.  The key is if it is an electronic shifter or a Stone Bennett electric or the Allison ATEC electronic shifter.  Good Luck, TomC

Man, this thing trips me up.  I am not sure who it is that I am answering here.  It is an 8V and turbo-charged, the transmission is a push button and it has "6" speeds.  It is shiftable all the way down to #1 and it has digital read out on it, so if something is amiss, it will give you "program codes" and I have a book with the codes in it.

The engine is a recent out of frame rebuild with 41,450 miles, transmission has 11,000.  It is a 40 ft coach, single axle, to the best of my knowledge.  I suspect the Jake may be engaging on the coach, but if it is, the reduction (down speed) is minimal and I assume for mountain driving I am going to have to use third gear (or lower) and watch the braking, keep it down.

Thanks for your input fellas, it appears I made a good decision by joining this crowd.  I put up a somewhat humorous post on the otheEagle board about driving it home the other day, if you want to see it?

How do you answer just "one post at a time" I could use a little help on that too.

Welcome boxcarokie,
I too have the Eagle single axle. I have had mine for 11 years and still love it!! Would be nice to have the 550 horsepower and 6 speed, but I will have to stay with the 6V92TA and HT740 transmission. As far as your original question about the jakes, I do not see much effect in high gear since the RPMs are too low, but if I gear down and get the RPMs up I have good holdback. As has been discussed on this board before, the jake settings are very important. The book calls for a slave cylinder to valve bridge of .059 for the 92 series engine, but I was not very happy with that. I changed mine to .057 and it works much better. Welcome to the madness and their are a few of us single axle Eagles here.

Never know how his Jakes are setup he may have one side only or a 2 stage with only one side working. For the 550 hp I doubt if he has that much HP the PO and sellers will tell you anything trying to make a sell.
I would like to know what model of 6 speed Allison he has the B500 with a double over drive would be hard to make work with a 3:73 or 3:36 gear I am thinking he has the 1000 series he will give us more info as he figures the bus out I hope.     good luck

Okay, I went out to the storage yard today and took a gander at it ... IT HAS FOUR EXHAUST PORTS ... that makes it a 8V92rt something or rather and I took a picture of it but I cannot figure out how to post it.

I think most  8V92TA's are around 400 HP unless they have changed to larger injectors. Jerry

Still not 550 hp do you know if it is a DDEC or a manual engine, looking from the front of the engine on the left side corner below the head there are numbers, serial and model stamped on the block if you can post those it will help us       good luck

Okay okay.  Here is the deal on "Daddy's Hobby", the previous owner says it is an out of frame overhaul, 41,000/11,000 on the tranny, he says it is "550" horse turbo-charged and he said it was "40" ft long.

This being my first bus, I am proud to have it, enjoy it, have it paid for (no liens) and have been driving the fizz out of it.  All I know about it is or what I know about it, I have been told.  I started saving for this sucker in 1976, during that time I managed to put two boys thru college, pay off a three bedroom brick house and save up enough loose change to make this purchase.

I have been seriously "kicking tires" and driving around looking at these suckers for about a year and one-half before purchasing this one.  It will be in Goddard Kansas in September and I invite any and all to come look at it and form your own opinion of who, what, where, when and why.  Most of this is over my head (mechanically speaking) but that doesn't take away from the pure joy of looking at this beast and knowing that she is mine.

As I continue to improve upon it, dress it up, add the little bells and whistles, modify it to my needs and desires, I will share it with you.  That is what it is all about in my estimation, and of course, all that really matters.

Whadya think?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo way, I am not ticked off, life is too short.  I appreciate all the comments and find them somewhat daunting at the moment, me being new to all this and the learning curve such as it might be.  I look forward to meeting you in September (sounds like an old Perry Como Dean Martin love ballad eh?) and we will hash it out and see what happens.  I sent Rusty an email about it today as a matter of fact.

Ohhhhh! I remember ,let me see now.......yup definitely, next month will make it a year since we adopted our iggle, and I was most certainly ticked off(at my self really ).
How stupid could I have been, not doing the research before we traded our other baby away for a bus.As it turns out the engine went south ,! due to over heating issues ,bad fuel pump, etc.
In my search for answers (after the fact,of course)I finally ended up here(and things haven't been the same since LOL),got my answers, but boy it wasn't what I wanted to hear.
All the same, as of today we are in the gate and one step away to swapping engines, and resolving the issues,to which I am Extremely pleased about.
I don't remember who's signature it was ,but went something like this"mony can't buy you happiness, but you can pull you can pull up along side it in a 40ft bus LOL.Van

I am not sure if you are responding to me or not, so here goes.  We live south of OKC in Norman (just outside the city) and I am not sure when we will be leaving and all that.  But that would be a good deal, perhaps we can all get together and make it happen.

Now I have something else.

I called the previous owner of the coach today in Arizona and he said, "when I had the engine rebuilt I asked them to install the largest set of injectors they could get into it.  This made it "500" horse."  So I was WRONG it is a 500 horse rebuilt Detroit 8VRTA92  something or rather

I had it wrong, but you guys, (a lot of you guys) had it right.  So take two atta boys outta petty cash for a job well done.  When I get a chance and I think about it, I will "step it off" and figure out if it is 35 or 40 ft long.  My money is on the later.

Remember all those who sacrificed so much, so that you might enjoy what you have this day.

My 10S is 40 feet. You can tell it is 40 feet if you have 4 bays, the ones in front of the drive are one piece doors instead of bi-fold. These were where the A/C condensors were located. This is one advantage of the 10S to have an extra bay.

Welcome to the insanity, I often wonder what I'm doing with a bus too but I worked a long time to get it and like yours it's paid for and doesn't really take up much space, I don't know which end is the business end of a wrench but i'm trying and with the help of the guys here I may even learn something, you'll be fine.  As long as mine fires up and runs I'm happy, My wife  see's it more as an excuse for me to not be underfoot around the house and I'm ok with that.  I kinda enjoy making sawdust and it gives me a reason to pile up some sawdust from time to time and nail a couple of 2x4's together.

From everything I can figure, it is a 40ft and capable of leaping curbs on the right side at a single bound!  Moved a rock with it in Alabama on one trip, which did not make me a lot of friends.  I took out a power pole in LA once, which effectively ended my trucking career.  But I am getting a lot better.

It is not the best investment I ever made but it is the most enjoyable (most of the time) and it does keep me out of the beer joints and honky-tonks so I guess it evens out.  My wife doesn't understand it at all, but then again, I cannot get a handle on Dancin With The Stars or Paula Deen, so I guess we have hit a uneasy peace.

Great website story!!! I'm fortunate that my maiden trip home with my bus was a tad less eventful but I still had to fight problems all the way home. I kept saying to myself, "It will look a lot better in front of my house!" The day after I got home I fired it up to move it and the engine generator locked up and smoked the belts when the air kicked it in and the sending unit that comes off the fuel filters disabling the starter began leaking all over. At least it was home!!!!  Keep the chin up. It'll probably get worse  :D :D before it gets better. A lot of great advise here. Later
