Title: Fire Close Call
Post by: larryh on May 17, 2009, 06:08:04 PM
Well on the road again to escape the 109 heat in Quartzsite AZ. went to Spencer Hot Springs outside Austin Nevada.

about 6 PM fired up the Onan Genny and bus filled up with smoke and the smell of burnt wiring or something killed the selector switch on battery banks and shut down genny.

With only a inverter to run freezer and fridge and other electical decided to head to civilization again 110 miles away to Battle Mtn. NV then on to Caldwell ID to my sons place.

Next day checked out Onan 5500 super low profile genny and found the starter had burnt up even melted armature and broke the magnets and several field windings totally destroyed.

Called Cummins in Boise with part number off starter and he had 2 in stock on shelf. Went to His shop and parted with 138 smackers and picked up a new style starter that superceeded the original because of this problem with meltdown.

I feel extremely lucky I had wired in a quick disconnect on battery system I can't believe not one of the fuses blew in power system 300 amp fuses.

Will be headed North ID and NE Washington in the AM for a week then on to Arkansas then on to Georgia plan on going back to Quartzsite when they have a week below 100 degrees.

My new financee and I have really enjoyed our trip so far and maybe she'll let be be a full time hubby before long

Larry,

Just wondering how old your generator is? We have heard that the Onan's are prone more to failures at lower hrs than some of the other brands...

What do you think?

God bless,

John
