Hoping someone can shed some light on this issue. I have a 1984 Eagle Model 10 #20XXX with an Allison HT740-D and a 6V92. To the best of my knowledge they are both the stock units. The trans temp guage has not worked since I bought the coach. I have checked the guage and it functions OK, I have traced the wire to the front panel (#148) and it appears OK. I can't find the temperature sender on the trans though. I have two small devices near the bottom of the trans on the drivers side just above the oil pan, I assume backup light switch or similar? Both are two pin connectors and only one is in use. I also have what I assume is the speedometer sender mounted to the tailpiece of the trans. I have inspected the trans oil cooler housing after searching the boards and no sending units there. Where else can I look? What am I missing here? I assume if I have the guage and wiring that it must have functioned at one time...
I've got a 81 Eagle 6v92 with the 640 trans. Your sending unit is on top of the trans on the drivers side see pic. My bus had the gauge but no sending unit or the wiring to the gauge.

KC, the temperature gauge only has 1 wire, the switch on the side with 2 wires ( 1 in 1 out) is for the backup lights, the other is for the low transmission fluid light and the generator on the tail shaft is for the speedometer and if you still have the VDO gauges call Norris for the right sender good luck
Thanks for the pic Pete - I'll crawl back under there and look again, it appears that it's up on top near the cooler fitting on the torque converter housing. I can't quite see the top but now that I know where to look I can feel for it or at least a plugged hole.
Luvr - thanks for the heads up on Norris, I've got the factory guage and I'm guessing I just have a plug where the sender belongs. I will give him a call for the sender.

Your neutral starting switch has the back up light switch in it. it is located on the gear selector. The selector has two switches in it all in one case. one for starting, the other is when you go up for reverse.

Thanks for the excellent help guys! I found the sender with no wire just a broken piece of spade terminal attached. No sign yet of a wire but I'll just run a new one if I can't find it - I knew those extra empty conduits I put in the tunnel would come in handy someday!
That is not always the case Pete if his bus came with the Stone/Bennet shifter the switches are on the transmission with the neutral on the passenger side by the modulator good luck
Clifford, What is the correct trans temperature with a 740 Allison? I have a sensor in my trans but I do not have a gauge. I would like to install one, but I see that there are two types of gauges available "trans oil temp" and "transmission temp". The later of the two has a range to like 400 degrees?

The temp sensor sits on the top of the transmission next to the outlet to the cooler. If looking from the rear of the transmission, it sits at about 2 o'clock position on the top. Good luck, TomC
Jim, my Eagle gauge (VDO) has the 400 degree range my 740 runs about the same as the engine temperature 180 degrees I don't have a aux cooler only the factory cooler on the engine good luck
Same with our 740 behind our 8V71. i have never seen the transmission more than 15-20 degrees hotter than our water temp, usually within 5-10 degrees. Jack
