Title: Are Series 60 motor mounts a standard size?
Post by: belfert on May 11, 2009, 06:50:09 PM
The bushings for my motor/tranny mount are cracked along the top side.  Are these standard amongst buses with Series 60 motors or is each bus different?  MCI lists them at $300 each for the motor/tranny mounts and not even sure if they are even available!

When does a motor mount need replacing?  How much cracking is acceptable?

Typically any type of engine or transmission mount that is connected to the engine is made by the vehicle manufacturer.  There are NO standard ones made.  So perhaps you're stuck with MCI's or repairing yours.  Good Luck, TomC

Brian take pictures and post them! Also I will have Robert compare the mounts between # 722 & 752 tomorrow since they are traveling together in St. Louis.

Note; Opps have I possibly forgotten to mention the latest ahhh acquisition (#752) of our combined companies?
Ahh last month we were severely overbooked and Don wanted my opinion on several coaches he'd been considering to buy, and use until we didn't need anymore and then convert into a personal coach for him & his wife to travel in.
Well I looked at all the choices he'd given me. And quite frankly for this reason, or that reason, or whatever I didn't like any of the buses he had in mind! So he asked me if I had any better choices to consider. And was shocked when I told him I was watching a super nice looking '97 (ah ah gulp, yup) Dina on ebay! Well he called the guy and they talked forever, and the guy sounded straight up and Don liked what he heard. Then asked me if I would fly out to San Diego, CA with him to look it over.
Well I was unable too, and was going to ask some of our members here on the board to look it over for me.
But just before I was able to post it one of the brokers we do lots of work for called me for a quote. Well it just so happens she is from San Diego. So I asked if she knew the guy, she didn't personally know him but had used him a couple times in the past and said she'd be willing to be go by and check it out and see if it was worth us flying out to look over.
Well when she called back and told me it was immaculate and she'd let me use it ANYIME, even over our 2005 S417 Setras I was shocked and told Don to go for it.
Well Don and Randy (another bus mechanic we know) flew out, and Randy checked it out and gave Don the thumbs up! So they brought it home, and it's been quietly backing up our fleet since!

I pretty much figured the motor mounts are custom to each coach, but I had to ask.  I'll try to get a picture sometime this week.

I talked to MCI and the bushing itself is replaceable for $175, but they only have one and would have to order the other.  If it does need replacing I might be better off to pull the bushing and try to match it to a standard part.

Brian,
Sorry it took so long to get back to ya on this. I broke down the morning I asked Robert to compare the '97 Dina to our '95 Setra which put other issues at lower priority.
Robert did check them, and when he went to let me know his findings he found out I was broke down and in a very bad mood. So since I was broke down in one of the new Setra's and he knew I was very PO'd about it, he waited to tell me.
Yesterday afternoon was the first time we'd seen each other since then and he told me that yes he'd checked them. And yes they were different. Sorry again for the delay.  ;D  BK  ;D

I took another look at my motor mounts this weekend.  I must have been seeing things because the one didn't really appear cracked at all and the other one isn't cracked enough to justify replacement.

I have no idea how in the world I would ever get the engine mounts unbolted if I did want to replace the bushings.  On one side the one bolt is under the frame rail.  I would probably have to loosen up the bolts holding the engine/tranny front and rear and the use a large pry bar to move it over 1/4" or so.  Dina doesn't have an engine cradle like a typical bus.  There are frame rails in the rear and the engine/tranny sit on the frame rails mounted in three spots.
