Post by: Tom Y on May 02, 2009, 05:45:16 AM
Theres an auction next Sat with a 70 Kenworth advertised with a V12. I would think 2 6s bolt together, or did they make a block for the 12?  Tiona Pa www.petersonauction.com   Tom Y

Tom it is my understanding that the V12's were their own 12 cyl block. Fondly called the BUZZIN DOZEN.  06 Bill

The 12V-71 had its' own single cast block with two 6-71 heads and two 6V-71 blowers.  They weighed in at about 3,250lbs and the non turbo'd version put out twice what a 6-71N put out-or 476hp and 1200lb/ft of torque.  Many went over 800,000 miles before overhaul-was one of those engines that were perfectly balanced and extremely strong.  Turbo'd with 80 injectors, you could get 600hp and 1800lb/ft torque-now that's some power-but not good fuel mileage.  Detroit also made about 300 24V-71TTA's for marine use that used 4 turbos, 4 blowers.  The sport fishers loved them because they were low profile and verrrry smooooth.
As comparison, the new Detroit Diesel DD15 has a 560hp and 1850lb/ft power setting, is 4 stroke, weighs less at 2,880lbs and will get close to twice the fuel mileage.  Amazing how technology marches on.  Good Luck, TomC

Tom C, Maybe you should look at this for your new buggy. They say 239k original miles on complete truck.  Tom Y

Tom Y- actually if I were rich to the point I didn't care about fuel mileage, I really did want a twin turbo 12V-71TTA for my engine- there is no other engine that puts out a growl like a 12V-71.  But alas, I can't afford 4 mpg (my Caterpillar 3406 will probably get in the 6-8mpg range).  Good Luck, TomC

Years ago I had a "Dirty Dozen" in a 72 Kenworth conventional. It was great fun then (I was younger) and fuel was cheap!

I can't vouch for them living a long time though, since I had to rebuild mine twice in the six years I had it. Once in-frame and once out of frame complete overhaul.

The second time around, I put in a set of matched, high performance, modified injectors. What a blast! When we put it on the dyno, it put just over 500 hp to the ground! ;D

I could pass anything on the road except a fuel station. If I was using the power (and of course I always was!), I would get as low as 3.5 mpg! :o And those are Canadian gallons too. :o

Also I could mention that I had dual 5" straight pipes on it! Could be the reason why people have to yell at me all the time now. lol

Later. . .
