Title: Alternator
Post by: Blacksheep on May 01, 2009, 09:33:34 AM
Thinking about changing the large OEM alternator to a Leece-Neville. I ran into a GREAT deal on a NEW Leece-Neville and was wondering what you guys would do. It's not like I HAVE to do this and if I choose not, I can always sell the LN and get my money back VERY easy!

The only advantage to the large Delco 50DN is the output.  If you still run over the road A/C, or are trying to run your roof top/basement air as over the road A/C on the inverter, then you should stay with the big alternator.  If you don't have big power draw from the alternator, then the LN is a good way to go since most big truck parts houses will carry them, compared to the relatively few that carries the big 50DN.  Good Luck, TomC

Just a view point........

Book say 50dn has 225 amp output  so LN makes altenators up to 800 amps w/28v so I'm sure you can find the right size
for your needs.

the one thing the 50dn has that the others may not have is a high life expectancy. It has been modified/upgraded so as to be run
24/7..... or til the cows come home.

For most of us I don't see that much need for that kind of duty cycle.

I do not have the 50DN alternator, only a small, maybe 45 amp, single wire one.  Since I do not run anything off of it, except typical automotive stuff, it is adequate.  The advantage is that it is light and relatively easy to change.  However, if I had the big one already in place, I would not mess with it unless I had too.  If the LN is cheap enough, you can just keep it around until you need it.  Probably having a spare is one of the best ways to insure that the original part will not fail.  That's the way it works with me anyway.

I don't know if your 50DN is gear or belt driven, but if your OEM 50DN is gear driven and you remove it, you will have to get a block off plate and gasket.  And don't forget to plug the oil lines.
We replaced our working 50DN when we we swapped engines for 2 reasons. The first was that the new engine was already set up with pulleys for a belt driven and our 50DN was gear driven (less parts changing involved). The second reason is that the only thing still 24 volt on our coach is the engine. Everything else has been changed to 12 volt and operates off our house batteries (and 12 volr alternator when the engine is running).Jack
