Title: MSRP for a 1990 MCI 96A3 (to register in Nevada)
Post by: BG6 on April 22, 2009, 03:08:17 PM
I just tried to get an estimate on what it will cost to register my coach in Nevada, but their computer system doesn't have the MSRP in it.

Does anyone know what this coach cost new?  Or maybe someone knows what it will cost to register in Nevada?

Ballpark figures are ok.

Hi BG,

MSRP should Not be in play for a used coach at a DMV.   It's worth is only what someone is willing to pay for it!

And you should give them ads from sold units alike for value comparison.

Good Luck
Nick-

That's what I figured, but the gal on the phone said I was wrong.

We'll see soon enough.  I'd just like to have some firm numbers to run with.

Not true in Nevada, Nick.  They use a depreciation schedule down from MSRP or original documented sales price.  If you roll in there with a used 2004 Mercedes and tell them you paid $2,000 for it, they are still going to asses the use tax based on what their chart says the car went for new.  And they know -- it's in their computer for more or less every make and model of car back so many decades.

I am guessing their database may be less informed on buses.

This is one of the reasons that we did not choose Nevada for our domicile state back when we hit the road (we looked only at the seven states with no income tax, and Nevada is one of the seven).

FWIW.

Michigan has a strange way for figureing it too, built before 1984 it's the weight that determines the cost of the plate, built after 1984 it's the price new, I'm not entirely sure of the cut off year being 1984 but it's close.

Hello BG6, When we bought our 1987 MCI 102a3, The new sales price was on the title. Ours listed and sold for a wooping $300,500.00. This is on our AZ title. It still floors us just to think about spending that much. When we registered our bus, we just stated how much we paid for it and they went off that. That was it. Hope this helps. All the Best, M&C

California goes by the sale price.  However, if they feel it is unreasonably low, they can do it differently.  I am not sure about the alternate determination.  They did not think that $100. was unreasonable for a 40 year old bus though.

When we registered our 1971, MCI-7 in Reno, Nevada the lady asked me what the MSRP was and I told her $75,000. I just took that number as a wild guess. She accepted the number and it cost $125 to register it last year. That is more than I wanted to pay but I didn't want to risk a higher fee if I tried to debate it and it turned out to be a higher MSRP.

$125 is cheap compared to the $275 I pay in the land of 10,000 taxes (Minnesota).  Registration is weight based so age doesn't play a factor.  Craig did get a collector plate for his, but he had to jump threw a bunch of hoops to get it.  Mine isn't old enough for a collector plate.

I'm very interested in getting a collector plate for mine but i'd loose my handicapper plate and then I couldn't get my 'by the door' parking spot at walmart with the bus. lol When I asked them about a collector plate they seemed to be want to limit my miles really bad, I'm not sure how or why they could do that but i'm still giving it thought.  And yes, I do have a handicapper plate on my bus lol.

Cody, with Libby's needs you really don't want to give up that handicap plate.  I've seen a fair number of rest stops and a few campgrounds where a RV handicap plate or tag is needed to get a parking spot/site that is specially designed for wheel chair/power chair use (i.e. ramps, adequate spacing, concrete pad that is wide enough, etc.).  And it will get you a "no hassles" discount at most govt. run parks.

BG,cost us $113.00 mh title last June -89 Eagle ,wifey knows the actual MSRP ,but I believe it was around 138 K,threw them for a loop though LOL,they tryed for 2 hours to locate the manufacturer in their books ,which they used.Problem stemmed from the bus was already titled "MOTOR HOME"in Illinois and they had been searching Eagle under that heading instead of Eagle bus,but other than that and the usual VIN inspection(for out of state vehicles)really had no problems(mamma stood in line LOL)and the fee seemed resonable at the time.

If you live in Alaska, and you are "OLD ENOUGH", (Senior Citizen) registration costs $15.00 for 2 years and in addition, after qualification, you can collect a state dividend.....Bill

States have all different rules on use of vehicles with collector plates.  Some states only allow a certain number of miles yearly while others restrict what days of the weeek they can be driven.  The State of Minnesota requires you to have a second vehicle registered.  You also may not use a collector vehicle for "general transportation purposes" whatever that means.  This has been interpreted by law enforcement to mean you can't drive a collector vehicle to work.

The whole point of the restrictions is to stop folks from registering old junkers as collector cars to avoid registration fees if they intend to use the vehicle as an everyday vehicle.

Minnesota says on the web that Collector plates are not for recreational vehicles, but Craig discovered the law really doesn't say that.  My vehicle is not 20 years old yet, but I would probably pay the yearly fee just so my plates say recreational vehicle.  If I had a collector plate some rookie patrol officer might decide I need air brake endorsement and all that if  I am not registered as a motorhome.
