Title: MC8 question
Post by: Oregonconversion on March 27, 2009, 08:43:26 AM
When I opened the top part of my engine where the blowers are there is a dipstick. What is this for and what type of fluid goes into it? It was a no read on he stick so I need to fill it.

It's for the blower drive gear box. Look in the manual for the proper stuff to put in it. You may also want to see where it's leaking from, it may be time for an overhaul.

Do you know what goes in it?

It should tell you in section 10 of your maintenance manual.

For the MC8 I'm not sure, but for the 96-102's it takes SAE 30

Be sure that the vent on top of that gearbox is clear too or when it builds heat and pressure you will have a mess and lose most of your oil.

YMMV

Should have a sight glass. Over fill and you'vegot a mess!!!!!!!  I use 90-105 gear oil in my C-3. Had a 8, a9, 2 96A3 used the same.

The blower gear box on my MC-5 uses 85-90 as I recall. At least thats what I put in it. Pretty sure the manual calls that out. Real important not to run that sucker low on oil.

"Should have a sight glass"

Not all. My MC8 has a dipstick.

I do not see any glass. it has a straight pipe (just like where you put oil into the engine) with a dip stick when you take the cap off.

It says in my manual to use motor oil here.  So delo 100?

This oil doesn't get dirty so I might make a suggestion:  use full synthetic.  Also, check with the syn mfr and see what he recommends as a replacement weight for Dino grease 90 wt.?  70 may do it cause the stuff doesn't thin like Dino and is a superior lube to begin with.  The cooling system eats 30 or 40 horse power so making that system more efficient will get you MPG.  Might not see it right off but the savings are there.
