Title: Trip to Tulsa OK area
Post by: Fredward on March 18, 2009, 08:44:25 PM
We're heading to Pryor, OK to see relatives next week (Tulsa area). I plan to head down I-35 from Minnesota. Its really only a one day drive, but with the bus we could easily stop somewhere along the way and stretch it into two or three. ANyone know of any campgrounds or interesting attractions that are open in March along the route?

Don't know of attractions, but I stopped at the Walmart in Bethany, MO for the night. Parked along the side closest to the motel 8 and had wireless access.

I have a couple attractions books in the bus. I'll look for ideas and let you know.

Glad I saw this post... I'll bring your lights back today. I intended to bring them yesterday, but forgot. I'll leave them in your garage if you're not there.

Wow someone is actually coming to Oklahoma on purpose, don't see that very often.  I live about 20 min from Pryor at Grand Lake.  There is a very nice water front park that will handle the big rigs about a mile from here at the south end of the lake called Waters Edge RV Park.  I am close by so let me know if you need anything or feel free to stop in.

You didn't mention the route but I would suggest, I-35 south to KC, take I-435 around KC, east is slightly closer, to Highway 71 in southeast KC, south on 71 to Joplin MO then take I-44 west to Pryor exit. Small amount of toll road in OK this way, all good road. Alternate would be I-35 all way down into OK until reach the Cimarron Turnpike in OK near Perry OK then east to Pryor. This is backtracking a lot and alot of toll road but is alternate.
If I knew your interests, I may be able to mention stops along the way. One thing you may want to consider, when you arrive at Joplin, instead of turning west to Pryor, turn east, go approximately 14 miles and on the north side of I-44 is Colaw RV Salvage. They have about 400-500 RV they are salvaging. Also have new manufactured RV parts. Since starting my conversion 3 years ago, I have bought $20K of parts off them. I spend about 2-3 hours a month there looking for "treasurers" I think I have to have.

I recall spending about $9 one way for tolls on the Kansas Turnpike from the northern end to I135 in Witchita.  Not too bad, but still a lot per mile.

They didn't charge me for the trailer probably because it weighs 500 lbs or less and the extra axle wasn't detected.  I was thinking we got charged for four axles on the way back, but we took a different route back and I don't know that we even used the Turnpike.

We used the turnpike when going to OK and we were charged as a car.  If you get the chance to go meet dolson you really should.  He and his wife are really terrific people and definitely worth getting to know.
