Title: The Fun Begins
Post by: JackConrad on March 18, 2009, 04:08:44 PM
I started getting our engine ready to pull to swap engines.  I have this engine ready to pull except for the transmission lines. I am waiting for more caps & plugs to seal the lnes and transmission fittings.  Tomorrow, I will set up the engine dolly and clean remove parts while I wait for the arrival of the rest of the caps & plugs. As the "Fun" continues, I will post more photos.  Jack

I think Jack isn't actually doing an upgrade of HP/displacement engine so to speak but merely doing an exchange for an updated (newer/fresher) 8v71.

The one he has runs but has many over the road miles and me thinks he wants to get where he's going using a little less oil and maybe a little quicker!  ::)

Jack,I noticed in the other post that the new engine is not a turbo engine now is a great time to go with dual exhaust they make a difference in the performance of the N/A 8v71 engines plus they sound good just listen to a Eagle with a 8V71. good luck

Jack,
I noticed fin the other post that there isn't any oil on that newer engine, are you sure it runs? LOL
Just kidding. It does the heart good just knowing that this addiction to spending money on buses isn't exclusive ;D Good luck with your project. I'm sure everyone is excited to see pictures of the finished project-I know I am!

The PA speaker (along with the one in the spare tire compartment) can be connected to the PA mode of the CB radio or to the radio/CD player.  We have several sound effct CDs in our CD changer such as a steam locomotive taking off, steam locomotive bell and whistle, and a jet engine starting up. Just something for fun.  Jack

The old engine & transmission are out of the bus.  Here is a photo of them on the dolly I used to removed them.  Before installing the new engine, I have a few parts to swap on the engines and connect the transmission to the new engine.  Engine and transmission needs to be installed on my Mc-8 cradle.  I also plan to pressure clean & paint the engine compartment.   Jack

I haven't posted any updates for a while.  I have just been taking my time, cleaning, making trips to pick up "stuff", cleaning, then more trips for the "stuff" I forgot, did I mention cleaning?  The new engine is now on the dolly I use to put it into the bus. I still need to finish cleaning and painting the transmission and engine compartment (hope to that today). I am waiting on a few gaskets for the engine components that need to be swapped. IF the gaskets arrive today, I hope to have the engine/transmission/cradle assembly ready to go back in the bus next week.  Jack

Jack,
I rolled my 871 out to replace the clutch on my MC-5. Good idea to do everything you can find to do when its out. I was using a borrowed dolly from a bus company so I had to rush it out and back in again. But while I was at it i steam cleaned everything; all the grease above the drive shaft, etc. Then I painted the entire engine compartment and replaced all air lines and the power steering lines. Also ran the rack while the engine was out which does not matter in your situation. But definitely take the time to mess with everything you can.
-Fred

Post by: JackConrad on March 28, 2009, 05:31:01 AM
Fred,
I wish I had a steam cleaner. I used my pressure washer to clean the engine compartment (back to the tag axle). I laid out a cheap tarp from Harbor Freight under the bus and out the door of my shop to prevent a mess in my shop when I pressure cleaned. Boy, was I a mess when I got done with that job. I could not get the tarp up under the rear drive wheels, so I quit cleaning at the tag axle crossover tube. I have repainted the engine compartment.
I will be replacing all the OEM flexible air lines before the new engine goes in.  Todays project is to change the front cover on the engine to allow it to mate to my MC-8 engine cradle. I also hope to get the transmission reattached to the engine today.  Jack

Sounds good. Its a fun project; I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I'd be afraid of tackling a repower like Brian Diehl's project, but swapping Detroits is a piece of cake. You gotta love flat concrete too. Its a real bonus.

Actually, I purchased some VHT manifold paint, but the directions say to apply and bake at 650 degrees within 8 hours of aplication to cure the paint. The manifolds are too big for Paula's oven and I don't think she wants me baking manifolds in it anyway. I will wait until the engine is in and running then apply manifold paint and drive the bus to cure the paint.  Jack

The engine compartment is cleaned and painted. The transmission is reconnected to the engine. DD sent the wrong front cover gasket, so I can't install the front cover off my old engine or the engine cradle (that attaches to the front cover). Probably a trip to DD on Monday for the correct gasket. Still have to torque the flex plate to torque converter bolts and bell housing bolts. Then install new flexible air lines, fuel filter housings and oil fliter housing.

Jack, where did you get the paint for the engine compartment? What color is that? I think it's the same color I have been looking for to paint my blower compartment but I haven't been able to find it at hardware stores. Let me guess, it's probably a detroit diesel color!!!

Thanks for helping make me a copycat.

Jack,

How does the Kck-down Modulotor ( i think that is the right name)  on your tranny work.  Mine has a linkage from the engine throttle with a box on the outside for adjustment where it goes to the tranny.   I have a chronic leak there that I would like to fix.   It leaks mostly there when it is sitting.

I have replaced the oring a couple times and that worked fro a little while and came back.

Looks like you just have wire coming out there.

I am in the process of designing an automatic engine washdown system especially for DD engines.  It will spray Simple Green all over the engine and compartment, then wash down with high pressure water.  It will have sensors so that it will only work when the engine is warm and only when underway, so that you don't mess up the driveway.

What do you think?

We plan to use a smaller 24 volt belt driven "truck type" alternator instead of that great big (heavy) 50 DN. The only thing on our bus that is still 24 volts is the engine ((starter, engine stop, fast idle, && emergency stop solenoids). Anyone need a 50 DN?  Jack

The wires you see are the neutral start switch.  The kickdown modulator is the small brass fitting to the rightr of the neutral switch. The modulator is air operated (off the air throttle).  I do not know if the mechanical modulator has an internal seal around the moving part as well as the O ring around the outer part of the modulator?  When replacing the Oring, lubricate it first to help prevent cutting it when installing.  Jack

Jack,

I see that you connected your breathers coming from your valve covers.

I found my 8V71 was not resistant to any back pressure.   This was after talking with some 2 cycle experts and a lot of trial and error of connecting the 2 lines, building a large breather, etc.   Even a small back pressure, produced larger oil leakage.

A fresh engine may make a difference for you.

The engine is back in, all the hoses have been reconnected, all fluids and filters have been replaced, and most of the wiring is reconnected. The bracket has been fabricated and the new 24 volt alternator has been installed. So, hopefully, tomorrow morning, I will connect the battery and starter cables and we will hear that sweeeet 2 stroke DD sound.  Jack

Alternators will work spinning either direction. The only concern is that the cooling fins are "tipped" the right direction or are straight.  Jack

Skip

I did not wrap the crossover for a couple reasons.  We do not need to keep the heat in the pipe for a turbo and our engine compartment rarely gets over 150 degrees (per RV safety Systems Fire Dectection System monitor).  I was also concerned that the wrap would allow moisture to condense on the pipe when the pipe cooled down in our humid environmenmt and hold the moisture leading to rust formation.  Jack

Man Jack, that is great. That is such a clean looking install. I am impressed. Now, how many bluegrass CD's did you go through in the project ;D ;D ;D.

God bless,

John

Jack has a better setup on that too, he has a Bluegrass station on XM playing in the shop all the while working.  No changing CD's with dirty hands.

Mike,

I am not at all surprised. XM is great for that. For me I use my Ipod, but I don't have the same selection as XM.

God bless,

John

Hopefully tomorrow.  I still need to reprogram my tachometer for the new 24 volt alternator, complete the Jake Brake wiring, and open the air purge valve on the defroster.  I will probably make a test run before reinstalling the rear bumper and hitch.  Jack

I should have snapped the jacket before getting close to the engine. I am not used to having to wear a jacket.  I aired the bus up with my shop air to test for air leaks before starting the bus, plus, I wanted full air pressure in case I had to shut down the engine in a hurry.  Jack

I have been pretty busy lately, but wanted to post a final update. I took the bus for a test drive and had 2 minor leaks, fuel and power steering. The power steering was from overfilling the resovoir, which I was able to remove with my handy little hand operated vacum pump.  The fuel leak was a bad brass fitting that I replaced. I also only had Jakes on the left bank.  Found a wire I had not gotten plugged in.
I had to recalibrate the tachometer, and repair a bad ground on the oil pressure gauge.  Everything is now working and no leaks.  We plan to do a trip next weekend to a Bluegrass festival (about 125 miles each way) as a shakedown trip. Then we hope to leave around June 15 until the middle of November (more on this trip later)  Jack
