This funny-looking structure is what I am calling a 'lower slide beam' which, not surprisingly, is the opposite of the 'upper slide beams' that I described in this post:

(That post was on 10th June 2008, which is a deeply depressing indication of how slowly the project is progressing)
Anyway, the lower slide beam in the photo above is the first of three to be made - one other will be similar to this one, and the third will be a much bigger assembly which is effectively a row of four of these side-by-side. Eventually I'll post some photos of everything actually fitted to the structure of the bus, at which point things might (nor might not) become clearer. In the meantime the diagrams in the earlier post should help illustrate the theory.
